There was a thread back in Jan. regarding how loud the HK system will go. Original poster felt like it didn't go loud enough. It seems plenty loud to me, regardless of the type of music you're listening to. I posted some measurements using a SPL (c-weighting) in the thread. I think the HK system has great balance and excellent imaging.

HK is great,could be better

Its very clear, great sounding, and pretty loud.BUT its not loud enough and as with 99% of all stock systems it could use alot more bass.I listen to mostly trance/house/club and hard rock/metal and on very deep bass if the volume is up you will hear the woofers "flap" which is annoying.Another very annoying thing is (this was brought up before) there is no volume display. You just keep turning the knob until the sound doesnt get any louder or it starts to distort.Overall I like it,but I expected more.I guess I'm just used to spending thousands of dollars on systems that made the ground shake and made parents hold onto their children when I was a few years younger....the good old days..........

He's right.. I had a close friend who is really into audio and watches once explain it like this... Bose is like the Rolex of speakers.. everyone thinks their the best because of clever marketing, but the real aficionado knows the truth.

HK has terrific sound but I agree the it needs more volume. It actually took me a a while to get used to (after two previous Boses), but now I love it.

A lot of people associate loudness with when it distorts. So, to them loud is when it is painful to listen to and listen fatigue sets in.. So, the HK doesn't distort at pretty loud volumes and is pretty loud in my opinion.

I have the Bose in my W210 and the HK in the W211. I much prefer the HK. Both systems will go much louder than I prefer.

Bose = reputable bass, medium clarity/treble.

HK = mediocre bass, very clear sounds.

I'd personally go for the Harmon Kardon.

HK7 DOES distort at high (If you can call it that) volumes.

Granted for most days the volume (low-mid) is sufficient, but it really irks me that when I want to crank a song to beyond mid levels the rer sub cracks/flaps with ever kickdurm, and ocassionally, on special ocasions the front center wil distort beyond sound recognition (quite embarassing) while all the while ... despite all wishful thinking...you turn the volume knob into infinity without any noticable increase in sound volume.

It's sad to say but the stock sound system in my $20k Nissan Xterra sounded much better.

My first MB and happy to at least say... that is just about the only thing I am not happy about.

just my opinion

100% agree. I do tend to listen to bassy (ie, rap) music and the amount of times I have to lower the volume to compensate for the farting of the sub is embarassing. And the upper end of the volume is low for my tastes. True, I'm not typically playing it that loud, but it happens, and I am less than impressed.

Although, I will say that when I listen to classical, or other types of CD's, I do hear a good amount of extra "stuff" going on in the background that I had never heard before. In that regard, the HK is very good.

Either way, I wouldn't want the old Blose system, nor the new HK. The Pioneer in my Lexus before this was superior (although not as accurate with classical style music). But I could crank that without distortion, and keep the bass high without the farting.

I have Bose in my SL55. It's terrible: huge mid-bass hump, no low bass, no midrange clarity, droopy high end, but spitty at the same time, poor imaging, distorted at any level.

I have HK in my E500. Decent, but not great sound. No real bass. OK midrange. Need to keep Logic 7 turned down to keep sound natural. I had a HK system on a 745 I had before either car. It was much better than the system on the E. It had an equalizer, which helped fix up frequency resopnse errors.
