Small Blue "supercharger" fans for air intake

Has anyone installed these on a 5 litre Mercedes? Seems like it would boost acceleration a bit.....

Don't get the blue ones. The red ones give a lot more horsepower.

Yeah, I heard the yellow ones are the best. More torques, many many more.

Are ou talking about the electric fans fom fleabay? Don't waste your time. If you had a .5 litter maybe, but it would suck so much amps that you'd loose power when engine would try to run the alternator.

Those fans block more air than they would blow into your engine.

That's great to hear. It's always nice to get something for nothing. Please publish the before and after dyno runs so we can compare them!

The who? Hey, I'm just a regular guy who has owned 5-6 Mercedes in my 63 years......I don't know if this gadget actually boost HP...what I CAN tell you is how the acceleration of my car feels w/these. I don't sell them (I'm a lawyer; not a sales shill). They also claim that this thing improves MPG a bit....I'll monitor that & report back. Sorry!

Claude: If you are legit, which it sounds like, I apologize for the snark. Of the three possible interpretations of your first post (naif, shill, troll), my reply was appropriate for the latter two. Speaking as a 64 year-old lawyer (seriously!) with his first Mercedes (but also as a car guy who is the current owner of a BMW M Roadster, Kawasaki ZR-7S, and the former owner of an Alfa Romeo, Jaguar XK-E, and the builder and autocrosser of a Dutton Phaeton kit car, powered by a Ford Zetec twin-cam), what you are feeling is the effect of wishful thinking. To use a legal analogy, it's like a client who now believes his own story. I tried to find a legitimate dyno comparison, but can't access them from work. You may want to do some reading on the performance car forums.

Claude,
Are you talking about the Tornado metal fin inserts?
If so, i can assure you it "feels” like the car has more go, but it does not.
I bet the improvement you are talking about is just in that split second or two off the line?
Well at low RPM it actually does help when the air flows ever so casually and gets the swirl effect to glide through the intake better. As soon as you open that throttle and air starts flowing with ever increasing volume, the fins actually start having a negative effect and slow down the air. The fins have to be variable in order to give the same effect at lower and upper RPM ranges when there is less and more air moving.
A while ago I actually tried using it on my Lexus, and it worked for the first few hundred RPM and then the car lost power and gas mileage when engine needed more air.

Brian: No worries. I'm not much of a car techie....I just drive them. You are probably scientifically right; but I have to say that my car never "burned rubber" of the line & now it does do a bit of it? I was also going by the "neck snap" factor...my neck does snap back a bit harder as I take off. Oh, I also had a Mercedes tech (MARS Automotive in Manassas, VA) do some tuning to it and had the 2 big trash-can mufflers taken out and replaced w/ custom straight pipes out the back. It sounds really nice & does not have that droning sound at mid speed. I don't know....maybe I'm just ready for that e63 AMG!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your thoughts....I guess there may be some wishful thinking here, but as you mention; it does seem to take off the line a bit harder and even squeal tires a bit at it.....I haven't tried it a full speed since I already got a warning from my friendly State trooper here in the DC area......and I am not a fan of real "high speed racing" as that can be very dangerous in traffic. Like I stated a minute ago...I'm ready for that e63 AMG!

How do you see them in the engine compartment? Aren't they inside the intake tubes?

I did NOT put the black rubber hoses back on. They look exactly like what you see here; one on each side.

OK, I wasn't going to beat a dead horse, I can't see the pictures from work and I haven't been able to use my home computer for a bit, but it sounds as if you may have disconnected the air feed between the filter and the engine intake. This means you're feeding unfiltered air to the engine, which may improve your horsepower and torque in the short run by removing the restriction of the filter, but decreases the longevity of the engine by allowing it to ingest dirt and debris from the air. That may have generated the power increase you feel, although my money's on the less restrictive exhaust, and the natural tendency to try out any mods by pressing the accelerator down harder than before.

No, this means you are dead wrong! The gadjet goes on the hard plastic tube BEFORE the air filters...KN, BTW....my explanation might have been confusing maybe?

Gladly, but being of a past generation, I'll have to wait until my younger wife comes home from her office so she may do this. I am not very computer savy.....it is surprisingly simple to do since a mechanical idiot like me did it in about 10 min..... while I post the picture I'll try & explain it. The 5 litre engine has two rubber "ducts" that go from the front grille of the car to two hard plastic tubes on each side of the big plastic cover on top that houses the 2 filters, etc. Next, take the two (about 13 inch) soft rubber ducts off, when you see the two hard plastic holes on the front sides of the filter assembly, just stick the "turbonators" there. You can also put back the two soft ducts back on if you want. I left mine off because the two blue "propellers" look kind of neat.

Yeah, I can picture it. I'd still like to see actual pictures if you get the chance.
