Drilling into front bumper for License Plate?
I currently live in Chicago, and a front plate is required. Where I park, they will ticket me everyday until I get one put on. I currently have a temp plate, but will have my perm plates later this week. I bought my car in indiana, so there is no holes or front plate. I did buy a mercedes plate mount for the front. My question is, will self tapping screws work, or will I have to have someone actually drill into the bumper? I am not going to take it to mercedes and have them do it, I can imagine they will charge and arm and a leg. I am more than qualified to do it myself, however I am not sure if I need to actually drill into it, or just buy self tapping screws. Anyone?? Thanks

Just behind the bumper cover is styrofoam, so you should have a body shop do it that is knows how the bumper is contructed.

good news, contacted my local MB dealer/service center and they said they would only charge me 24.95 plus tax to drill it/install my mount. Well worth the price if you ask me! Case closed

ALso, there are a few alternatives if you do not wish to drill in to your bumper.
1) There is a solution that uses the threaded tow hook to mount a license plate....google tow hook license plate
2) I ordered one of these and used wide washers to mount it to the mesh area just underneath the bumper. It extends forward enough so that the plate is fastened by the bottom two holes. A small piece of industrial velcro on bumper and plate provides rub protection against the bumper itself.
