Steering gear oil - 03 E500. Manual was no help- search turned up nothing

As title says, I have questions regarding the steering gear oil in my E500

The steering is making a whining noise when it is cold, so I opened to hood to see where it's coming from.

Appears to be coming from next to the oil filter, where another reservoir is located, I'm assuming the steering gear oil/fluid.
Pulled the cap and its basically dry, very minute amount on dipstick/cap.

Pulled out the manual and it said I would get a message on DIC, but I have nothing.

Is this this the reservoir for the fluid, and could that be the result of the noise?

All the manual said was take to mb service center. What oil do I use and is it a dealer only thing?

Look in the owners manual and you will find the specs with the oil and other items. You will fail the pump if you drive it dry as it is a vaned pump. However where did the fluid go??? It leaked somewhere, so top it off then find the leak. You might still need to go to service center to fix the leak. I think this is what you are getting from the manual now. But there is a list of lubricants for this application in the owners manual.

This is from the manual. Steering Gear Lubricant -
Power Steering
MB Power Steering Fluid
MB Part No. BQ 1 32 0001

That's a good question to where the fluid went lol.
I have only had the car for a few months, and shame on me for not checking/changing fluids already.

I just noticed the noise the other day and its driving me nuts

Is that indeed the reservoir for the steering fluid? It is located to the right of the oil filter right up in the front of the engine bay.

PS Fluid

For the past several years, M-B, BMW, and Porsche have recommended Pentosin CHF 11S for the ZF power steering systems. This is a synthetic fluid that is "friendly" to seals, hoses, etc. Hence its pricey...so don't be shocked.

PS: Be sure to confirm w/dealer that this is good for use in your '03, though.

I had the same problem some time back. It is defintely the power steering reservoir getting low. You can get the fluid CHF from NAPA like I did. It's huge can, over a quart. It does not take much to fill it. Make sure you don't over fill it. The fluid expands like engine oil when it's hot.
