Oversize tires on 18 inch wheels

Same as most, I'm tired of bent and cracked wheels. Has anyone ever put 16 inch E320 wheels on a E350 4matic that has optional 18 inch wheels installed? I asked my dealer and they will only say that size is not recommended by MB but won't say why. Are the brakes too big? Another thought...what if I put on 245/45R18 or 245/50R18 tires on? I know the speedo will be out but other than that, are there clearance issues? I'm fishing for ideas to get a smoother ride on these rough city roads.

My understanding is the brakes are too big for those wheels. I would put thicker tires on if I wanted a better ride.

You shouldn't put 245/50s on your car. Even 45s are excessive, in addition to adversely affecting the vehicles responsiveness it isn't recommended by MB as that is a HUGE sidewall suited for small SUVs. More than size a lot is based on the tire itself, look for a softer tire that promises a comfortable ride. There are a few by Michelin that are good.

Get better, forged wheels. I run low-profile 255/35/18s and haven't had any problems.

My stock 16" tires are 50 series. Not sure why it would be excessive. Probably equally as excessive as 20" wheels with 35/40 series.

OP - find the OEM tire and size for the AMGs. Take it to tire rack and find the outside diameter of the tire. Try to match your wheel/tire setup as closely to that as possible.

Any feedback on using 245/45-18? I noticed that tires on BMW 5series use the same 245/45-18 tires. So it doesnt seem outrageous as long as you dont run into clearance issues.

If you don't run into clearance issues you should be fine with 245/45s thought 245/40s would be a better option - what I used to run before I got low profile tires.

205s and 225s on a W211? That's really narrow like Toyota Camry narrow. Even with an E280 I'm sure it's easy to break traction on rubber that skinny.
