06 E320CDI 'black death' worse case???
I've been shopping for a W211 CDI and looked at an '06 E320CDI yesterday with 120K miles. Perfect cosmetics and drove well however, it had a CEL and an odd sounding OM648. Seemed like a single cylinder miss, was showing some black smoke off idle. I did not hear what sounded like a leak nor did I see oil, tar as the engine cover was installed.
The car was at a wholesale lot so, no idea of how long it has been driven in this condition.
It seemed to idle a little rough indicative of a miss but had very good power.
I've read about how difficult the injectors are to pull on the OM648.
Will a leaking injector seal throw a code that the dealer can read? I'm willing to pay for this service but would diy the repairs if not too extensive.
Can the head be damaged if it has ran this way for long?
I'm willing to make an offer and gamble if the chances are just seals plus one injector. Not, if the head has to come off or it needs all six injectors.

"Black death" sure sounds terrible and looks like it.But,problem can be solved without any large money issues, atleast here where i am from-Europe (in inependant shops, not at dealerships). There is special tools for dragging out injectors, cleaning carbon builds up and for removing dirt from injector housing inside cyl head.Sometimes hapens that injector gets damaged during removal action but there is no need for replacment-Bosch injectors can be easeally repared (for normal price).Costs for removal and cleaning all six injectors costs (Bosnia, eastern Europe) around € 200.Reparing goes from €50 to € 125 per injector.Job is dirty and health dangerous when you dont use inhalation protection but can be done in one working day when there is no need for injector repair...

So, I shouldn't worry about the head being damaged?
Does the seat always need reaming?
Would it be wise to remove all six and reseal them?
Thanks!

I do this job often in my service.I never had a cyl head issue."Black death" is common thing in benz's cdi engines-all inline diesel models from 200 cdi to 320.Never seen this problem on v engines.Yes,injector seat needs reaming allways because if not doing so seal will go bad in short time period again and all work is ineffective. Also,it is rare thing to find that all injectors are clogged with carbon build up but you can do preventive job by pulling good injectors and change seal-it is not tough job to do...

I'm thinking the CEL is from a previous attempted repair. Who knows...
I did noticed it was in need of brake rotors and tires and suspect the PO didn't want to dump any more into it so, it was traded off. Typical...
My wife really wants a W211 CDI and likes this one. I keep telling her to be patient but they are hard to find. I'll make an "as is" offer on this one and see what happens.

Who sells the seat reamer tool? I've found the injector puller but not the reamer.
I'm confused as to what gets reamed (me maybe). Does it just clean the carbon gunk off the injector seat in the head? I've reamed many of 617 PC glow plug holes but the thought of reaming a hole in an aluminum head has me concerned.

The seller is holding out for top dollar, did not accept my fair offer. Unfortunate, as he will sell it to some poor unsuspecting individual that will drive it into the dirt while making payments.
So, I'm again looking for a clean 06 320CDI.

CDI Black Death repair
At least in the US it appears to be an expensive job UNLESS you opt to do it yourself. I was looking for an E320 CDI and researched it - posting the information here for new people looking at this Black Death issue.
Turns out LegitStreetCars has precisely dealt with the repair and explains it all, including which parts to get etc in his YouTube Video http://tiny.cc/E320CDI-black-death

The real reason my CDI Turbo Diesel Mercedes was and still is the cheapest in the country is because of a horrible engine problem. If left untreated this issue could cause catastrophic damage to my engine and render my car worthless.
Don't buy a diesel car or truck without watching this video and inspecting for Black Death!!
