Best tires for the price?

Best for the price? I'm sure you could look at all of the price versus rating statistics on each tire in the segment but the bottom line is this: you drive a Mercedes you should be getting a top quality tire from Continental, Bridgestone, or preferably Michelin. The best (and one of the most expensive) summer tires out there is the Michelin Pilot Super Sport, OEM on the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta - excellent reviews for the E-Class. As an all-season 4-Matic choice I went with Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires, rated top in their segment as well. Spent about $1200 on a set. Don't skimp on tires as they will change the safety and handling characteristic of your car. I guess for a good price versus average tire balance... anything from Yokohama is cheap but still acceptable quality. Anything from Goodyear besides the Eagle F1 is horrible as is Firestone.

Continental Extreme Contact DWS best for the money. you did not ask lowest price. lowest price good tire IMO is the Cooper RS3-A, which was rated very high by Consumer Reports Mag. Total price will be about 850.00 to 1000.00 U. S. dollars.

I'm going to agree with DWS as well. I have Michelin MXM4s but winter performance is nothing to write home about. I know it's not a winter tire, but for the price of around $200/tire I expect better. DWS on the other hand are supposed to be the best all season tires in the snow.

Do you have Primacy or Pilot MXM4s? Because winter performance on my 07 4-Matic is superb with the Primacy (came from the Pilots and I would agree with you), I'm running 255/35/18s so I paid a bit more than $200 per tire.

I have 245/45/R17 Primacy MXM4 all around. I also noticed that tires started to develop dry rot even though they are less than 5 years old. Maybe I got a bad set as all 4 of them are showing dry rot. So far I have been less than impressed with Michelin because for the price there are better options out there.

Take a look at Nitto's. http://www.nittotire.com/ I just put some on my CLK and love them, I will see over time how they will be. If all works out the will be going on my 350 when needed. I used to be a Michelin man.

I just went through tire choice for a w203 recently and chose the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 with 300 wear at $426 and $80 rebate. I'm happy with them and if they hold up well will be getting them for the E when the time comes. I had always bought michellin but became displeased after putting a set of pilot sport A/s RF that were very expensive and just don't seem to perform well. (I know its an all season with run flat but for 1400 a set I'm disappointed...)
Btw my priority was braking, then wear then cost and no snow down here.

Pilot Sport A/S had a lot of premature wear issues, I haven't had any dry rot issues with my Primacy MXM4s and they are brilliant on dry pavement and in ice and snow. Michelin is still the king of the market in my opinion with excellent tires like the Pilot Super Sport and many of their grand touring options. They also just released the Pilot Sport A/S 3. Bridgestone has some good higher end tires like the Pole Position line but I generally stay away from their consumer tires - their Blizzak winter tires are top of the market though. Continental makes quality tires that are not necessarily the highest performing but a good solid balance for the price. Nitto has recently stepped up their game so the Nitto NTO1 might be worth checking out if you are a weekend road racer or want something that is as close to race radial as possible. Hankook and Falkan don't make very good tires in my opinion except for some of their higher end R-compound models but they generally don't ride very well. Goodyear and Firestone are **** except for the Eagle F1 series from Goodyear.
Hope that helps you, others might disagree but an overwhelming majority of people I run with on the weekends feel the same way.

Easy. Look at the tires on a New MB, buy those they give best for the $$ and the engineers determined best for new. Or just buy Michelin's and accomplish the same results.

Avoid the Toyo Proxes 4 Plus at all costs, had those put on my e39 M5 and they were terrible.
One tire I'd be very interested in hearing more about are the Pilot Sport 3's, which just came out.....

Been in cars with DWSs that are smaller (GTIs namely) and then I've had MXMs on my E550, and in a probably not very accurate comparison I would say MXMs are more comfortable.

Well it depends what you want to go for. The ExtremeContact DWS is I believe an all season tire whereas the Eagle F1 is a summer tire with a stickier compound. Overall, Goodyear is junk and Continental is a good tire, but the Eagle F1 is their only decent tire in the "high performance segment" so it kind of depends.

I'd really like to drive a little on the new Pilot Sport 3s....a friend with a 535 just had them put on but he's not much of an enthusiast so no help there. It'll be the DWS' or the PS3s whenever I get tired of the MXMs, I don't see keeping them until they wear out.

I have a set of Potenza RE970 bridgstones, and I love them. Excellent treadwear, amazing grip wet or dry. Not the cheapest, but I have learned that tires are not the place to save money.

I just installed the DWS on my 500E and love them. They are very quiet and look great.

Cupping is a major problem that most dont' talk about..........but to quote, "Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires, rated top in their segment as well. Spent about $1200 on a set. Don't skimp on tires "
