noisy wipers - is it just me?
Now on my third set of wipers - and they are still noisy - and I mean REALLY noisy - all the time, whether its raining light or hard.
Dealership cleaned the windshield with wire wool and solvent today, and still they judder across the screen - 15000miles, third set at $170 a set (done under warranty I am glad to say).
Dealership says I have to live with it. There is no adjustment on the wiper blade.
Anyone got the same?
Any ideas?
A VERY frustrated Marc

The best things you can do are clean your windshields with soap and water and a raiser blade.
Here is what I have done for years and it works:
1. When your washing your car, while the windshield is wet take a the raiser and go over the entire glass.
2. Lift your blades up and clean them also.
3. Dry it very well and put some car wax on the windshield, and buff out. Don't use rain-x since is seems to smear.
After that 3step process you should not hear anything or see any chatter in the blades, unless the blades are worn or cracked.

My pre-nav car had real noisy wipers. It was embarassing they were so loud. It also left a black mark on the sides. The nav car is much better. You shouldn't have to "live with it". That's the attitude that is casuing M B's quality surveys to plummet.

try using windex to clean your windshield. the new e's wiper does not have "bone" so blades contact glass closely and cannot stand "wax" on glass. a machine car wash spreads a wax on whole car including windsheild which causes wiper noise.

i have found out that on my car there was a wax build-up on the windshield that made caused the noise. the noise happened at the end of the top swing and the end of the down swing (park position). i sprayed on the dry window a wax-tar remover and cleaned it really good. this made the wipers quiet. everytime my dealer washed the car, this happened. i think it may be something to do with the rinse 'wax' finish sprays you find at car washes. my dealer has a auto-car wash station on site.
also, the adjustment for the angle is: bend the arm. this is the adjustment mb provides!

Most noisy wipers are actually caused by windshields that are not perfectly smooth because of built uop residue of wax or sometimes water stains (especially for cars not garaged). The best thing I've found for cleaning windshields is No Touch glass stripper (Pep Boys usually carries this). It eliminates almost all streaking, waterspots, etc. You may have to apply twice -- and for really bad cases you can apply it with a buffer (Iused a Porter Cable on one windshield that was bady water stained).

I have a coat of Zaino glass polish (I think it is Z12, but I don't have it handy) on the glass, and it seems to be working very well in preventing or at least minimizing spots after it rains, etc. I am extremely happy with the Zaino products I have used. However, my wipers did not squeak before I applied it, and so I can't say whether it would help out on wiper noise.

I had the same experience with the original car wipers being noisy and the navigation replacement car wipers being quieter as did Chris (cte430). Somehow, I think it is related to the degree of pressure from the mechanism holding the blades against the windshield. The pressure seems firm, but not as strong on the new car wiper blades.
Perhaps the tension is adjustable.

Glass polish will take care of wiper noise as its actually the different "slipperiness" of the class that causes the chatter. The polish will make sure its all on slipperiness.
As for glass cleaners for the inside, nothing beats Stoner's Invisible Glass cleaner, it is truly awesome.

Thank you for all the feedback guys.
It seems that there may be a build of of wax on the windshield, presumably from the lance jet wash I visit occasionally if time is tight.
In 20 years of motoring though I have never had this problem.

The stock wiper noise is embarassing, frankly. My friends make fun of me, if they ever sit in the car when it is raining ($70K for a car and you have THIS din to deal with?! etc.) You are certainly not the only one who feels that way. My '97 Honda was quieter than this. It is unfortunate that we have to use glass coating to lessen the noise.

i test drove the porsche cayenne over the weekend. it too had the euro-blades that we have. i tested them
with the washer fluid just to see if they made any noise. they were very quiet. but this was on a automobile
that's probable never been washed and certainly used a lot.

I know that this is hard to believe, but since I have picked up my replacement, we have not had any rain in Seattle to check to see how these wiper blades work.
My pre-Nav had the shudder at the top and bottom of the swipe. They changed the blades and the problem was solved. They still were not completely quiet but almost acceptable.
