2004 E500 4matic Wagon Front Wheel Bearings

Once again I am back to the MB community for my next project.

Has anyone replaced the front wheel bearings, inner and outer, as a DIY.

I did look at my front right bearing, it has been winning for about a month, it had heat spots on it and didn't look great. I think adjustment and repacking is not a solution at this point, I have decided to replace it and the race.

While I the front wheel was apart, I was going to replace the inner bearing - this looks like a little more work. I haven’t seen much on the removal or replacement of these bearings.

Does the whole assembly have to come off - so a machine shop can press this bearing in?

Is there a DIY for this?

I am using Timken Bearings as a replacement and the Mobile 1 blue grease - Those of you who are purest don’t get crazy on me - After research it looks like the Timken bearings are as good or better then SKF.

Any help would be great.

Thanks
Craig

USE CAUTION on bearing selection. The factory OEM have a chamfer relief built into the inner race inside that the aftermarket may not have. You won't see this unless you look closely. IF you use aftermarket without the chamfer the bearing will not seat properly, fail and damage the spindle. The grease seal will have magnets in it for the ABS system and a standard seal won't have the magnets. You will have to use OEM seal for sure and possibly for the bearing. If you miss these details you won' t have properly functioning ABS and you can possibly burn out the new bearing and much more damage.

Grease Seal

I do have the calibration tools for the bearings, don't have a press - there is a machine shop I use that can press the beatings for me.

I am having trouble finding the grease seal - does anyone have a part number - I am assuming this is only a dealer part.

Thanks for the input.
