Engine get's hot and knocking like broken valve lifter (SOLVED)

Good Day,

I'm a new member to this forum and i found it very useful . Being an owner of a w211 E 280 Estate Avantgarde 2005 model with a milage of 140,000 km.

I bought it one month ago and now i'm having serious issues with it.
Everything was fine but last friday i was driving in the highway at around 180km/h in the night and when i got home i notice that the engine was knocking like in this video

It has a 6 cylinder in line . but i notice that
  • the temperature in the bonnet is not normale while it shows 90 degres Celsius in the panel.
  • the radiator fan is working at a low speed
  • the AC is no longer working

Since monday I have been to 4 different mechanics and their diagnostics are completely different.
The last one told me that the cylinder is dilated and this is why the piston is knocking inside and all this diagnostics without opening the engine .....

As if that was not enough the battery became flat which mean that their is problem with the alternator and in the middle of the highway no brake, no acceleration , everything disabled including the power steering motor.

Now i'm lost they told me to buy a new engine which will cost 2000$ . Im in Dakar Senegal and the mercedes local representative said that they are no longer taking care of Mercedes cars with DPF .

I need useful advice on what could be the likely cause of the problem and what to do.
Thanks in advance

PS: I just spent the day with the mechanic to show him how to change the alternator ....you guess how good they are ....

I know a common issue on the M156 engine (I realize you have the M113) is lifter/cam/adjuster issues which leads to a very loud tick like this, I was told by a technician that this is the result of lack of oil filling that gap and allowing slap that causes that sound. I don't think you need a new engine, but it's impossible to be certain - though my guess would be bad cam and lifter since this issue usually leads to permanent damage on both parts.

Not sure about the designation of the 280cdi inline 6 cylinder but pretty sure it's not the M113.

chances are you will have to open the engine to see what the damage is or just replace it with a used unit.

yes today i checked again but the noise is coming from the thermostat side ....front right of the engine.

is there any mechanic part in it ? . is the reason why the engine is not properly cooled ?.
anyway tomorrow i will change it cause the radiator fan stop completely working .

It might also come from the oil i didn't know which one to put so the guy did the service with a semi-synthetic 10w40 from Castrol .

I think i can still the engine ... wish i could find an online documentation service who accept credit card from outside US as well as Mercedes Parts dealer.

Excuse my hijack... my 2008 V6 gas engine w/43K has a loud clicking noises like bad lifters on startup that goes away after a few seconds. This happens about half of the time and always goes away, but I was curious if this is a normal thing with Mercedes, or just my car.

I don't know what oil is in there - whatever the Mercedes dealer put in there before they sold it to me. I'm guessing 5W30 or maybe 0W20, whatever is the current "thing" these days.

Thanks!

It's not a normal Mercedes thing, it is, however, a common problem on W211 AMG engines that can lead to completely worn lifters/cams

Hi all , here is an update .
i found a very good mechanic who was able to solve the noise by cleaning the valve lifter with petrol .
After then he removed the engine head to verify if everything was ok but he find out that the piston 1 melted and messed up the cylinder.(will update this post with Picture)

This morning i bought a second hand l6 w220 diesel engine (1000Euro) for them to swap the engine block .
I had 3 injectors , the a/c compressor and the engine starter dead so buying a hole engine was the best choice .(I couldn't found the same version as mine).

I hope that i will get the car by Monday afternoon and that the changes wont affect the performance of the car .

Update : Hey guys . I am enjoying the car so much the engine is quiet and smooth .I have paid 200$ for the service and i dont regret it will do the A/C today and i'm done .

Thanks all for the help
