20" wheels rubbing

Have 20 X 9 & 20 X 10, 245/30/20 & 275/30/20. Lowenhart LD5 noirs on black E500

Wheels feels like rubbing in front when i reverse, cant see or tell where. Before I get screwed by the shop, anyone know what is likely happening. Is it the suspension bolt?

have you tried 18 or 19 inch wheels. 20 inch wheels are very heavy which increases unsprung weight.

Why do not you try the prescribed dimensions? Maybe MB has reasons to prescribe certain dimensions?

Modifications are just what they imply "leaving the relms of the factory spec"... Absolutly nothing wrong with it as long as it is done safely and not to screw up your car or the parts you bought in the process... In the good Ol days (late 70s) the problem of rubbing was something you just lived with... This was the small price you paid for looking cool...But now that I think of it they were mid 60s muscle cars and not 60K mercedes...
If your getting the rubs only when your backing up I'd consider myself lucky and live with it as long as your not doing serious damage to your ride. Otherwise you may try smaller tires and (or) rims as advised in ealier posts, but this could get pricey. 20"s on a car with an active suspension is pushing the envelope, but hey if you can get away with it then more power to you bro....
The rarest harley in the world is a stock one (as I like to say)...... Goodluck....

20"s rubbin no mo

HOH,

Thanks for your input. I fixed the problem with the shop this am and will explain for anyone else having the issue. Pretty simple: We filed the suspension bolts down and used a heat gun to push the plastic interior fender guard in slightly. Took about a 1/2 hr.

It has nothing to do with hate. The best way to help you should be to convince you that it is better to use prescribed dimensions.
If you do not understand that there are many reasons why you may use certain wheels and others not, than you need help.

And...am I wasting people's time here with my opinions? I do not think so, but in this thread I do not tell you what you really want to hear, and you have a problem with that.
Maybe you should not ask for help but just ask people to tell you what you would like most to hear?

i have the same problem with my lowenheart BS5's. THey are 20 X 9's all around. I actually posted a thread in the w210 area about changing my suspension on what ever i get. I have a 97 now that i am gonna get rid of for something else. I want a 2002 but if its easier to make the correct modifications to an 03 then maybe thats what i will have to do. I was also getting rubbing on making turnes that get the body rolling as well as backwards.

Let's all remember that patrick is our one credible source for factory information, albeit across the pond from most of us on the list, but his input and information is invaluable. Many. many thanks to him for his help.

I think patrick had a reasonalble question, too. I don't know for sure, but I doubt the degree of customization exhibited here is common in Europe; heck, I don't understand it either but I'm not on the west coast. I seldom see any W211's, and when I do they are all stock. The desire to be unique and spend large amounts to do so is obviously present in some quarters, but it is not commonly understood (by me, anyway).

Gee, I guess I am a just a dumb, arrogant californian that doesn't understand prescribed dimensions (I think they are something our doctors here in Cali give us when we get a little stressed out...). You don't need to be european or a "credible factory source" to figure out what you are supposed to do size-wise with the rims on the E class, but thanks for the snobbery Pat. I guess my response is, whatever dudes, I'm outta this thread.

20 inch wheels are over-the-top for an E Class. They are also VERY heavy which increases unsprung weight which is not good for handling.
