Parktronic

Before I make a fool of myself, (already done on numerous occasions), I need to know if I have a defective Parktronic unit.

On my previous E-class the Parktronic activated with the flashing lights and an audible 'beep'. As the vehicle got closer to the obstruction the colour of the warning changed and so did the audible warning, this audible noise changed from just a 'beep' to a continuous note. When we first took delivery of our new car the Parktronic refused to function.

Now, all of a sudden it has decided to operate, but the audible warning only comes on when you are within approximately ten inches (25cm) from the obstruction. Is this correct? The Parktronic has always been switched on, (we have tried switching it off in case the switch was incorrectly wired). I have told the wife that the audible warning is just to remind her that she has actually hit something, but she doesn't appreciate my sense of humour.

Does the audible noise only commence when the Parktronic warning goes into the red zone?

Thanks very much,
John

Yes, John. In my case as well.

I do have some problems with the Parktronic after washing the car in cold temperature. It will start to indicate even if there are no obstacles, but only at speed below 10 km/h. Didn't bother to do anything about it yet.

Mine also only beeps when the lights hit the red, so you have to make sure you are watching the lights. I haven't had any problems with them, apart from in the snow which made them give false readings.

Every MB car that I have seen with Parktronic (total of 4) has only beeped when it was in the red. In this case, one red gives you a fast beep, while two reds gives you a continuous tone.

The only times I have had problems has been recently after washing the car and it is cold out as others have mentioned. Makes sense, since the water would freeze in the sensor, causing it to think that something was in the way.

Thanks very much indeed for all the replies. Our Parktronic only sounds at the very last stage, giving off the continual warning note.

Thanks,
John

yes, the demo on the MBUSA website gives a misleading view of how the product works - in my view it *ought* to beep from "one-yellow" getting faster to a solid tone when you're at "full red" (the Jaguar X-type parking aid does this without any lights).

As to when it goes off on its own, I've seen mine set off in rainy weather (I assume by big waterblobs rolling down over one of the sensors at low speed) to wire mesh garbage cans on NYC street corners on the *far* side of an intersection.

I'd say it depends on the radar reflectivity of the objects around the car. I've backed up very close toward some plastic orange cones in a garge near work and the parktronic never made a sound.

So trust but verify :-) when parking.

Oslo - Mine does the same thing after going to the car wash. Must get water behind the sensor or something. Works fine after it dries out so I don't bother bringing it up on service visits. I like watching it go off when you are the first car in line at a downtown intersection and the pedestrians walking in front of the car set it off. Depending on my mood I can pretend it's a laser gun sight! Outta my way!!!

Yes, on my E320 CDI, there is an intermittent tone when the first red lights up, at about a foot away and then two reds and a continuous tone at 6 inches.

The tones will (briefly) override the radio/cd.

The lights for the rear facing parktronic are in the roof lining (obvious I know, but I took at while to notice them) and the tone is slightly different, so you know which bumper you are going to be replacing.

From bitter experience, I can advise that you should not reverse just using the mirrors and parktronic if there is a medium sized rock behind you that will almost (!!) fit under your bumper.

I've noticed in NYC it goes crazy at times, saying that I'm about to hit something when stopped, but a car will usually be about a couple of feet away, but then it goes away.

I've also noticed at times that after a lot of hard braking, it will give me four red lights. I then either have to turn off the system and turn it back on, or it will resolve itself a little bit later.

Overall it is a great thing to have. My garage space is very tight, and this car is bigger than my previous car, making getting in and out difficult.

It's also fun when people are in the car that don't know anything about Parktronic, and you purposely park close to something setting off the beeping. What the f*** is that? is a possible repsonse.

I find Parktronic very useful, but I am less enthusiastic than BMcD-E500 is about having it go off when I am stopped at a light. I would have preferred that it operate only when the car is moving.

Entertained, not enthusiastic. It only goes off when people cross in front of the car at a light, not all the time. Not sure if that's what you meant. Parktronic was on the car - if I ordered the car I wouldn't spend the money.

i also agree that parktornic is very usefull, and it hasnt gone off on its own at any time, its been flawless. you can turn parktronic off if you want, and turn it on when only needed, the button is right by the shifter.

The only time mine's gone off on its own is when the sensor is covered in snow, its never done it in rain or thunder.

Dear Oslo,

You are not alone, my Parktronic goes crazy sometimes after the rainy day. I am used to it any way. It takes patience to drive new W211. Don't you think so??

Good Luck!!

Steven,

Patience? Yes, I got a lot of it. So I really don’t care that much about those gremlins occupying my car. Most of them will faint as soon as I restart the car. The pleasure of driving a MB, more than outweighs these minor annoyances.

My wife has the answer to this problem. It's called parktromatic. She simply backs up until she feels a slight bump then forward until it happens again.

Haha..

I love the MB parktronic. Visual is way better than BMW audible only. Damn beeping sound bugged the sh*t out of me every morning backing out of the garage
