Parktronic
On my previous E-class the Parktronic activated with the flashing lights and an audible 'beep'. As the vehicle got closer to the obstruction the colour of the warning changed and so did the audible warning, this audible noise changed from just a 'beep' to a continuous note. When we first took delivery of our new car the Parktronic refused to function.
Now, all of a sudden it has decided to operate, but the audible warning only comes on when you are within approximately ten inches (25cm) from the obstruction. Is this correct? The Parktronic has always been switched on, (we have tried switching it off in case the switch was incorrectly wired). I have told the wife that the audible warning is just to remind her that she has actually hit something, but she doesn't appreciate my sense of humour.
Does the audible noise only commence when the Parktronic warning goes into the red zone?
Thanks very much,
John

Yes, John. In my case as well.
I do have some problems with the Parktronic after washing the car in cold temperature. It will start to indicate even if there are no obstacles, but only at speed below 10 km/h. Didn't bother to do anything about it yet.
The only times I have had problems has been recently after washing the car and it is cold out as others have mentioned. Makes sense, since the water would freeze in the sensor, causing it to think that something was in the way.
Thanks,
John
As to when it goes off on its own, I've seen mine set off in rainy weather (I assume by big waterblobs rolling down over one of the sensors at low speed) to wire mesh garbage cans on NYC street corners on the *far* side of an intersection.
I'd say it depends on the radar reflectivity of the objects around the car. I've backed up very close toward some plastic orange cones in a garge near work and the parktronic never made a sound.
So trust but verify :-) when parking.

The tones will (briefly) override the radio/cd.
The lights for the rear facing parktronic are in the roof lining (obvious I know, but I took at while to notice them) and the tone is slightly different, so you know which bumper you are going to be replacing.
From bitter experience, I can advise that you should not reverse just using the mirrors and parktronic if there is a medium sized rock behind you that will almost (!!) fit under your bumper.
I've also noticed at times that after a lot of hard braking, it will give me four red lights. I then either have to turn off the system and turn it back on, or it will resolve itself a little bit later.
Overall it is a great thing to have. My garage space is very tight, and this car is bigger than my previous car, making getting in and out difficult.
It's also fun when people are in the car that don't know anything about Parktronic, and you purposely park close to something setting off the beeping. What the f*** is that? is a possible repsonse.

You are not alone, my Parktronic goes crazy sometimes after the rainy day. I am used to it any way. It takes patience to drive new W211. Don't you think so??
Good Luck!!

Patience? Yes, I got a lot of it. So I really don’t care that much about those gremlins occupying my car. Most of them will faint as soon as I restart the car. The pleasure of driving a MB, more than outweighs these minor annoyances.
My wife has the answer to this problem. It's called parktromatic. She simply backs up until she feels a slight bump then forward until it happens again.
I love the MB parktronic. Visual is way better than BMW audible only. Damn beeping sound bugged the sh*t out of me every morning backing out of the garage
