How big of a difference in fuel consumption does a diesel engine really make? Let's say the E500 gets 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway (using numbers from the S500 since it will be the same engine - forget about weight difference, etc for the moment), approximately what would a diesel's mpg be for city/highway?

Vectra, diesel can be up to 40-50% more economical than a petrol engine of the same size.

This could just be the start too. There are rumors that if the response is good a variety of engines could come this way in all the auto lines and the M-class as well. The biggest problem at this point is the availability of ULSD. When this fuel becomes readily available in NA there are a host of automakers ready and willing to sell them here.

Hi guys, from my experience with diesel engines, i can tell you that the new ones are amazing regarding performance. The new CDI engine in the S class in Europe S400 CDI, is the fastest diesel in the world with top speed of 250 Km/h and more than 250 horsepower; the engine of the E 270 CDI (curent) develops 170 HP and goes up to 230 KM/H.
These diesel engines have a lot of torque whcih make them nice to drive and very fast; (some with more torque than petrolium engines). However their acceleration is a bit slower than the petrolium engines.

Diesel engines may be slightly slower than petrol engines of the same size when accelerating from the standstill, however once moving everything changes, in-gear acceleration is much better than that of a petrol engine thanks to huge torque numbers.
For example new 270 CDI has 177 hp, as much power as 240, but don't mention torque...270 CDI has almost all of 500's torque! (92% of it to be precise, 425 NM vs 460 NM).
I agree with dcc, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
