Back in the GAME!

Hey guys after being out of the game after loosing my 2005 E500 in a dispute i am finally back in the game, I was able to get a 2009 E350 with only 77k on the clock fully serviced black on black interior is immaculate. But does have the fuel smell when just filled with gas. i guess all good things have there draw backs. I only have one picture right now as the weather in Californias Monterey County has been less then favorable to do a complete exterior paint correction. But i am happy to be back in the Benz world

Nice pick up! Only year with the upgraded NTG. Take that to the dealer for the extended warranty for the fuel smell. Enjoy it!

I just called the dealer and I was told that they won't cover it because they don't know anything about that issue

Then you talked to an idiot. The fuel tanks are known to have problems on the 211 and they have an extended warranty on them.

What dealer you call? The tank recall come up just few months ago, but dealers should know about it by now. Can't say for sure your car is covered, but at least they should check.
You should have at least 6 MB dealers in 25 mile radius.

First of all, congrats!

With regard to the fuel smell issue, I bought an '08 E350 last year. It developed the infamous fuel smell after a few months. Dealership replaced the entire fuel tank at no cost.

Seeing that you are in California, I thought I'd share that I was told that I have a PZEV engine (common in CA), and the PZEV equipped vehicles carry an extended warranty to 150,000 miles on anything emissions-related (including the gas tank issue).

Check if your engine is PZEV. Also, My check engine light did not come on, but the tank was covered anyway.

I started at my indy shop (South Bay Autohaus in San Diego). They were the ones that suggested I go directly to the dealer b/c they would have to charge me at least the diagnostic fee. However, they told me they believed it was a warranty issue and referred me to the dealership. I explained the issue over the phone (bad gas smell when tank was full). The first thing they asked me was it I had a PZEV engine and whether the check engine light had come on. I told them I had no idea what kind of engine I had & that the check engine light was not on.

Over the phone, they got my VIN and said, "yup, it's PZEV. You have a 150,000 mile warranty on anything that's emissions related. Bring it on in." I took the car in, after about 10 mins they told me they had to replace the fuel tank, it would be covered under warranty but they'd need the car for a couple of days. They even offered me a loaner. 2 days later I had my car back with a new fuel tank.

This was MBZ of El Cajon in San Diego.

----Edit---
Oh yeah, I also told them that my Indy said they believed it was a warranty issue

The trick is that per most owners reports they don't diagnose the car.
To diagnose fuel assembly leak you need to top-off the tank.
Than if you replace the tank - you have to extract all that fuel. That is lot of work.
Than the stealers do get paid by warranty for replacing the tank, while they will not get paid if they diagnose it negative.
Bottom line - reporting fuel smell at fill up is all it takes to have new tank under recall.

VIN decoder shows Code 917: PZEV emission USA

Yeah, same here. I usually top off at night before going home. my garage would smell really bad for a couple of days each time I filled up - not to mention the interior of the car.

It doesn't matter if it's PZEV or not. All 211s have either the fuel components and/or gas tank extended warranty. All the dealer needs to know is that there is a fuel odor coming from the vehicle. It doesn't matter if it's inside or outside of the car. Just tell them that and to look it up and the warranty will be on the VMI. On the newest 211s some of the components can be replaced instead of the entire gas tank.

In this case it doesn't, but Pzev isn't covered by the extended warranty. However the standard Pzev warranty in a Pzev state covers it as they have a 15 year/150k warranty. If it's non Pzev, there's no limit on the mileage, it's covered up to 15 years unlimited miles. CA is a Pzev state. If you own a Pzev car in a non-Pzev state, the warranty may be much shorter and you may not be covered. You would have to read the warranty booklet to see exactly how long the warranty is in a particular state.

I'm in virginia and replaced a pzev tank last friday (207 chasis), have seen various techs installing metal tanks in 211's as well. Pzev is irrelevant in regards to a "fuel leak" and or "fuel smell". It is a safety hazard, metal tank or plastic tank. The dealership should resolve the issue as it isn't user or consumer error as to why it's leaking, its product defect, big difference. MB pays for everything. Extracting the fuel, which takes 10 minutes or so, and replacing it. It's a well paying job if you are a tech at a dealership and any SA that tells you otherwise is incompetent and must not be interested in making themselves along with the dealership money and also keeping the customer happy, which in theory is really all that matters in the end.

Your VMI will state components or tank. There's two options with production dates in (-).

Get a new SA and or find a better Stealership... Good luck!
