W211 E500 oil level question.

No oil warnings are on, no dipstick, still 5000 miles before next service and my (dash) oil level says 5.7 quarts. I read here this system is not super accurate but I also that my engine (113.969) should contain around 8 quarts. Can it be that much off or is some sensor not work telling me I have to add oil?

Is it telling you 5.7 quarts with the engine running or with the engine off for a while?

If you're in doubt about how much blood is in the engine, I'd say it is time for an oil change. Change the oil and filter, fill with the recommended amount, and check the level from the dipstick tube with your newly acquired dipstick. Also, take a moment to check what the instrument cluster says at that point. Then you'll know... and you'll be able to check the oil level with your new dipstick whenever you like.

When my car is running, the instrument cluster will tell me I have anywhere from 4.5 to 6.5 quarts of oil.

Thank you and sorry I didn't specify a few things correctly:

1. I checked the oil level with the engine stone cold, had not run in two days because I'm doing other work to it. When I start the car the level goes down to 4.5 quarts. Again, no dipstick I can check with...

2. I just purchased the car and even though the dealer said it had a recent oil change I just wanted to check it myself. Without questioning his integrity I wonder whether these sensors can be off by that much.

Not your specific model, but a good thread to give you some insight: https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...-question.html.

you should be good unless it is asking you to add more oil.. just to be on the safe side.. add a quart and see if that changes..
