Also, when you pick up your car can you please ask if the torque converter software update will also apply to '03 models? Thanks.

my car has the torque converter issue, i am convinced after reading these posts however mine is a bit different
at slow speeds it doesnt downshift enough and when i accelerate and let up mid range in the RPMs the gear holds and doesnt shift into the next gear..so if i let up , i get massive engine braking..anyone else have it??

Michael,
You just described my problem exactly. It's most noticeable at low speeds when the transmission refuses to downshift during a slowdown. When you reapply the gas, the car jerks.

Brake drags
I bought a 2004 E320 in late Feb, I experience the following problems:
1/ brake drags, when the car is stop mode or about to move, I hear some groaning noise under the car. Took it to the dealer and they said this is the SBC waking up... and it is normal. I really hate this.
2/ Sometimes in the morning when unlocking a locked car, I hear a loud groan in the hood. Again, the dealer said this is SBC waking up
3/ Car slightly pulled to the right. Dealer said this is normal because MB alignment system is very sensitive and they way the road is paved, tilting to the right, the car tends to pull to the lower side. They told me to save my one time free alignment till 10K check up.
I saw some early posts on item 1, has anyone experienced problem 2 and 3?
Where do you find TSB?
Thank you

I had a similar problem when I picked up my new car from the dealer. It turned out that the kick-down switch under the gas pedal was stuck down.
One way to check for this is to go through your gears using the steptronic function. If you can shift up and down the box smoothly with none of the symptoms you describe above, have a go at moving the swith under the pedal around with your hand. This should free it up.

Jerking
My 2003 E500 also shows jerking that seems to be coming from the transmission right after cold startup in the morning at slow speeds. It is gone once I drive as little as down the street. UI have already had the ECU upgrade done which has reduced it a bit but it is not gone entirely. What else can be done?

Brake Problems
I am in Canada and noticed the brake groan when releasing the brake at the lights and giving it gas, it sounds like the brake are not releasing properly. I am taking it into the shop, I will let you know what happens. This problem occurs for a few days then stops and then comes back..

Went out with the tester. He thinks it is the Transmission. They will be flashing the transmission for me today (2004 E500 build date of Oct), I will let you know.
By the way, I got a 2004 C230 4 Matic as a loaner.. Ugg... I am sorry for any ownewrs of this car out there, but man, I honestly prefer my 93 Sunbird (with XMRADIO) over that car, hehe... (Probably because of the XM though).

I hope they will fix this nagging problem once and for all.
I think it is the transmission too giving the fact that the car groans at slow speed or when it is stopped.
Last time I took my car in, I also got a C230 as a loaner. It drives pretty good. I really like it. The dash board, however, does not even come close to that of the E320.
If they fix it, could you post the error code or action item that the dealer did for the rest of us.

I went out and drove my E in a few different conditions today after reading a few of the new threads concerning the engine downshifting. I have to agree that it DOES seem to be the tranny and not the brakes. When I shift to neutral, the car glides freely. When the transmission is set to S it seems to become more touch in slow speed conditions. We felt that the "C" setting relieved this.
Unless I'm nuts, I could swear that the car was smoother a month ago. It's a 11/03 build car, so I'm unsure if there has been an update to the software that might smooth things out.
