2008 E 350
Ms O

I am a proud Benz 2008 E 350 owner not since the last 3 months when my car had to be towed 4x . It was seen by 2 mechanics and the last trip to my Mercedes Benz specialist was nothing but deep frustration. 2 tow truck drivers say , it was my fuel pump and then finally confirmed by my faithful mechanic. I was told that the fuel pump / tank was non replaceable. That car is just over 8 years and did not hit 100 k miles yet. Until now, my car is still in the mechanic shop cuz it needs another towing to my house. My 3 older toyotas have not given the family a nagging headache. I left a message in a customer service and until now I am waiting for a legitimate response.

My questions. would I get a warranty?

Any input you have would be appreciated. Who do I appeal to or call so this is fixed ? Please help me .. if this does not get fixed, what a rip off.I saved money for 10 years to purchase this dream car. So so disappointed.

The fuel pump and tank is non replaceable? Fortunately, the mechanic who gave that diagnosis is. Time to get another mechanic!
Quick google search shows that both the fuel tank and pump are available. I'm going to guess that means they're replaceable too.

The tank can be replaced. I had the dealer replace the tank and fuel pumps in my E63 under warranty due to the leak these cars get.

Your mechanic is an idiot, find a new one.

Some of those cars have recall on tanks and chances are you can get it for free.
Call the dealer with your VIN and ask them to check.

Or simply, ....... get back into a Toyota.

I am sorry, but I hate it when people compare a Benz with a Toyota. That is like comparing a Donkey with a Horse. Both will do the job, but a horse is way more classy and comfortable to ride on than a Donkey.

Just to be clear, Mercedes extended the warranty for fuel leaks only on the whole tank assembly. Which includes the tank, filter/sending unit, fuel pump and associated gaskets. If you have a strong gas smell after filling up, whole assembly will be replaced.

But if the fuel pump just failed due to old age etc., and there is no fuel leak, it can be replaced but there is no extended warranty. i.e. You pay.

First fill the tank and check or have checked the area on top of tank around the filter/sender or fuel pump for leakage. Access ports are under the rear seat, (middle on the wagon). Usually leaks around the filter sender on drivers side. If no leak, find a good independent mechanic who works on Mercedes or a good mechanic you trust. Don

Right the fuel tank is covered for 15 years unlimited mileage if there is a gas leak. They will end up replacing the fuel pump and the filter as part of the whole gas tank replacement. You have to say the key words though which is that you smell gas in the cabin and when they take it apart, they normally see gas leaking from the top of the tank. On the other hand if your car is a Pzev and you're in a Pzev state (like CA is one of them) then the tank is covered under that warranty for 15 years 150k.

2008 was a decent year, but these cars were 50-60k when new so won't be that cheap, especially if you use the dealer. Find a better mechanic and read the forums. Things that may pop up later on this car would be the motor/transmission mounts, thermostat, serpentine belt/tensioner/pully, oil separator, steering angle sensor, etc., but they can be handled for a reasonable price if you're not at a dealer.

Otherwise if there's no gas leak when you fill the tank up, there's no other warranty. Standard warranty was 4 years, 50k and even extended warranties were just 7 years 100k. Sounds like it's too old for you to have gotten a CPO warranty and any warranty you buy now probably won't kick in til after 30 or 60 days and if it's already a Benz dealer, they put all their diagnostics into the VMI (vehicle master inquiry) of the car so the insurance company could find out if they ever pulled the VMI.

FWIW, mine didn't smell in the car at all but it did make the garage smell like gas after filling up the car.

Did you get any history with the car? Did you buy from an MB dealer, another line dealer, a used dealer, or an individual?

Mine had leakage around the pumps under the seat like most. It just didn't smell at all inside the car.
