Front SAM Replacement: Do I Need Dealer?
On a 2004 E500 4matic sedan, I may need to replace the front SAM (Current Part Number 2115459101, original part number 2115454001, all according to EPC). All of the sellers of this part say it has to be programmed.
I have access to a self-contained Dell laptop G3 running about a 3-year-old version of DAS/XENTRY with developer mode, but it is self-contained. Meaning that I have no ability to reach out to "headquarters" with it and log into any central database. (More accurately, the computer may be able to try to connect to Daimler, but I don't have any ability to log into their system if that is necessary.)
I watched a youtube video where some guys have changed the SAM and are programming it, and it appears that their computer calls for them to input a login and then the computer communicates with "Headquarters" for the proper 3-digit (I think) software code to input to the SAM. That's what appears to happen, anyway. But their software says something about being an "Online" version at the top, although it appears to look and operate just like mine.
I don't want to buy a new SAM from Husker and then find out that my computer can't program it and I have to go buy one again from my A#%$#&! dealer who refuses to work on any parts that don't come from their stockroom.
Any idea whether my self-contained DAS/XENTRY can program that SAM without getting more info from Mercedes? Or is that an essential part of the process? Or is there an alternative way to program it with DAS, like taking the settings from the existing SAM. Although I have to say it appears that one actually "codes" it rather than "programs" it -- that is, one doesn't download a bunch of settings to it but rather a single code number from Daimler.
Thanks in advance!!

I'd recommend to check out *******.COM. There are some members there who offer offline & online SCN coding of control units via teamviewer as well as EEPROM data dumps from JTAG'd control units that you can d/l & use.

I have a E320 2005 with 82000 miles. I cleaned the engine at a car wash at low pressure. The cover was not on tight to the SAM unit and water got in and REALLY messed my car up. The quote from my local Indy was $850 or $900. I looked on e-bay and purchased a used one for $50. I changed the wires from one unit to another. Everything works perfect. I think there are 22 wiring plugs that the SAM has. Draw a diagram of the plugs and change from one to the other. Just make sure you get the same number on the replacement unit as your original. Good luck Steve

When I decided to purchase a used unit I checked with MB before my purchase. They gave me a number but it was a current updated number. Used units did not match with Mercedes current updated number. You will need to pull your unit UP and look underneath to see the number. It's shaped like the letter L. Its has a number on a white sticker. May be hard to see with all the wires. No need to unplug any wires to see the number. My number was 2115453901. Hope this makes sense. Any questions give me your number and I will call you.
