Automatic - Stuck at neutral. Can't shift to reverse/park

Please help. My 2005 E500 drives normal but when I stop and try to shift it to reverse/park it gets stuck at neutral. If I take my foot off the brake, then I can shift it to reverse/park.

sounds like a bad brake switch. remove the lower black plastic cover (3x torx + white plastic screw) then you should see the switch, simply twist 1/4 turn and it comes out ~$15 for the part

I replaced the brake switch as you said. That did not fix the problem. $23 from Mercedes in San Jose, CA. Anyone else familiar with this issue? Please help.

If you put your hand on the shifter, can you hear or feel the solenoid in there engaging and releasing?

Follow the steps to manually bypass the interlock

Thank you raceratb, that link has a lot of good information. I will report back once I fix the problem.

I have the same issue on my 2007 E350. Any fixes for this? Same symptoms: won't shift into reverse unless foot is taken off the brake pedal. Will sometimes randomly fix itself, but 90% of the time it's an issue. No codes of any sort.

In any issue with the trans, first check the fluid level. There's a right and wrong way to do this. Next, that brake switch has a setting, an adjustment so to speak, wherein the white plunget that protrudes from the switch should be pulled all the way out before installation.

I'm going to give the brake switch a try first and hopefully that fixes my issue.

Unfortunately, no. I've had shops suggest everything from replacing the brake switch to the shifter module to the entire assembly itself (quoted over $1,000 for the job). Did you end up getting yours all sorted out?

Ah I see, I think I'm going to get it sorted after scanning my ESM, I have code P1856, there is an ebay seller "aboltd" that repairs these and I'm going to send him my part number so he can ship me a repaired unit (I'll send him my broken one for the core charge after). If you scan your ESM it will most likely be the same issue. I'm fairly confident that it will fix it. I'll update you after!

Fixed the issue with the rebuilt ESM from Aboltd!! It was a huge pain to get to it but the new unit has solved all my shifting issues!

I have the same thing, but after reading this I remember noticing a code on the OBD before relating to ESM. Would that be the one I should look at? Mine gets only stuck in neutral when trying to park. I have to quickly release the brake and I can switch it to park.
