Shifter code P1856 *FIXED*

I cannot get back into reverse or park with my foot on the brake. if I take my foot off the brake (oddly enough) it goes back into reverse or park just fine, every time

car is also in limp mode, trans won't shift

do I need the whole shifter assembly, and if so what is the part number for that? thanks

Have you checked the brake switch yet? It's much cheaper and easier to replace than the shifter assembly, and more likely to go bad (true on all cars) since it's subject to more wear.

Simply need to read/clear fault memory and perform function test with STAR, see line 19 of attachment.

well it turns out someone had HACKED the shifter to even work at all! note the drywall screw holding in the emergency release button, unreal!

the shifter that was on the car wasn't even the same part number, had a different connector... amazing what people will do to save a buck!

got it fixed and I must say it was really easy! shifts again no problem!

looks like all I have it a brake wear indicator left to tackle. ABS & ESP are still off for some reason, but overall I'm happy! thanks again for the help everyone

Wow, what a drywall screw hack.

I wonder if a diagnostic code reader such as the iCarsoft MB II would allow a used replacement shifter to work without needing STAR? It does clear the codes. Probably doesn't "run diagnostics" though.

I was very close to having to replace my shifter assembly recently, but tore it apart and found a cracked solder joint on one of the solid state LED light gate sensors on the PC board inside.
