M-B Tex upholstery with leather front seating inserts
Unbelievable! In a $50k plus car the only leather is a strip down the center of the front seats? All its competitors cover the entire seating surface front and rear, door and center console armrests. Heck, a Honda does that.
So in order to really have leather you need to add a $1500 stand alone option.
Amazing! No, more like SHOCKING!!!
You will find a large number of things shocking about the MB Brand now adays.
This will probably be my last MB excluding a roadster - they are still the best on those.
Things like COMAND, the locked in phone, outrageous prices for options, lack of worldwide options in the USA, decontenting etc will drive you up the wall.
Then again, it is a Mercedes something's gotta be bad about it eh?
There is a delay on acceleration, which I did not notice before. and the brakes, not quite sure about them. My old car a 2000
528 BMW. has full leather (Except seat backs) 5sp MT. folding seats, heated seats
sunroof, llisted for $44500 got 2 k off.Handling ,brakes are amazing.Yes desiel is cheaper than premium gas, but for 5K miles a year I probablly will not notice, Oh yes no maintence on 05 mb./next the silver star will be a$500 option,
And you have now noticed the delay on acceleration, which is typical with most diesels when you really kick down. The only diesel that i have driven that was not that noticable was a BMW 3 series, with that car you felt connected to it, which is BMW's plus point. BUT this engine is still remarkable for a diesel, a real power horse.

i'm having reservations about my cdi ordered for July, seats are cheap. mb tex . (VINYL Plastic ) on a $50 K + car. center console that may have no cooling, , revised center dash. Those are things you can see, what about stuff you can't ? Also

At 5k mi/yr, diesel will not pay for itself. You'll use 30% less fuel at 15% lower cost (40-50% savings). However, you are only using 250 gal/yr. Even at $4/gal you would only be saving at most $500/yr, and less if that is urban driving. At $4/gal we would save nearly $1800/yr.
Also MB CDI, Audi FSI due this winter, and to some extent BMW 545/745, BMW 760, and VW TD (not relevant for this discussion) are the only modern engines for sale in US. BMW 545 has Valvetronic (super slick), howerver only the 760 has direct injection in the BMW camp.
I really want to like the BMW and I really hate Chris Bangle.
wait and see when car comes, yes I do hear desiel niose at low speeds and idle.

Leather seating surfaces has been something done for a long time by a lot of companies.
On many of the higher-end Mercedes seats, the back is mostly plastic and the sides are stretchy lycra-like material, to allow for expansion with the multi-contour features. These seats can still be "full leather" but the amount of leather required is less.
MB-Tex came in a lot of cars in the past, including the E-class and 190-series.
It was only for a short period in the late 90s when nearly all Mercedes had all-leather seats. It seems our memories get spoiled.

It also came with metallic paint @ no extra charge as well as HID Xenons.
I wish the W211 did...
My S2000 has leather seats, door panels, shift knob and steering wheel - standard. The seatbacks IIRC are vinyl.

went from upholstery discussion to engine and gas price predictions by the end of 05...stay on topic..
Anyways, love the leather in the MB, so so nice...
The problem is MB doesn't do the 'seating surface'. They do a strip down the middle in the front, none in the rear, and none on the armrests.
Every other car I know of does more leather than MB. My '94 Supra TT has more leather than the E-320.
The $1500 optional leather brings things back to normal.
Also, in the US you can't get Nappa outside of a $6200 designo package.
Ordering an E-class is way worse than ordering a BMW.
Pox on Chris Bangle!!!
I will be sticking with the lexus. Good prices for both the car and parts. Will be getting the new hybrid rx330!
