Smart Keys need to be ordered through the local dealer. You will need proof of ownership (registration) and a valid government ID (Drivers license). The cost is around 250.

$250 in those days sounds cheap as most members report $400
Last time I needed key about 3 years ago, I called dealer located on suburbs and they sold me new chrome key with blade for $162, so it is worth calling around.

BTW some might want to consider buying "service key"
The one with no remote, but cheap enough to keep for emergencies.
Suppose MB USA is trying to make the no longer available.

Price of keys is dependent on whether vehicle has key-less go or not. Regardless, the blade nor fob aren't cheap. If I recall correctly the keys for the newer models are even more pricey.

Our W212 uses exact chrome key as W211, what can be used on W210.
And no, the W211 key will not start W212 as my wife tested. Got me fooled on back seat as the key activated cluster, but when turned to start nothing, so first tough was battery went low.
Till I took the key from DW and noticed different key ring.
Blade was like $16.

I've always wondered how sites that sell MB keys do it. They never really quote the price of how much a locksmith would charge or if there'd even be one in your area. I guess there's software that allows the locksmith to add a key to the system but it's probably not Star as the dealers don't seem to be able to do it.

The blanks are cheap on eBay, about $2.50. Not sure what's the cost of cutting it.

That assuming those places actually make key working.
I "know" automotive locksmith in Poland, who can take any chrome key and program it to your ignition while charging about $100 for the service. He is licenced locksmith but I never ask if he has MB authorization if you know what I mean
Than he needs ignition switch for the procedure so if you do it from US, not only additional cost, but wait time.

There seems to be a couple other key programmers out there.

You don't need authorization from MB to do work on your own property. Whether the device you're using is authorized or conflicts with federal/state law is a different question. I guess there's a few items out there that will reprogram new keys to the car.

There's one unit called the AK500 plus key programmer for around $400 that only seems to work up to 2008, that was probably due to an update to EIS.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/AK50...847431898.html

Then there's a newer CGDI Benz Key programmer that does the newer keys but it's more money.

Don't know if any of those work though. If anyone decides to try it, report back. Considering the cost of those systems, it's probably not worth it unless you need several keys made.

Since I bought new house a year ago, I bought tons of stuff from China.
WI-FI switches, gate remotes, backup camera for W212.
I read the instructions and descriptions very carefully to confirm the item "should" work for my purpose.
Unfortunately about 50% of the items will not do the job, or fail in the matter of days. Most of the time the seller will refund me the money, while not wanting the item back.
I can play such games on $20 or $40 items, but doubt I would risk $400.
I did buy commercial range oven tough via Alibaba, what brought new learning curve about US National Security and import procedures. Lot of hassle and extra money, but the range looks good and the price sure beat $8000 average US pricing for comparable.
Than you read topics about C4 with laptop bought from China and even when (necessary) initial support was good - the seller vanishes from the internet some time later in case the unit fails down the road.
