M272 / M273 timing cover bolts from side

I posted this in the W219 forum but didn’t hear back yet. I am still working with tech support on my WIS disks.

Driver and passenger sides bottom front corner of block. Above the oil pan and rearward of timing cover. On passenger side it is next to the chain tensioner. They are E12 bolts.

The timing cover has 8 bolts on the top and the oil pan bolts on the bottom along with the various front bolts.

Does it have two bolts coming in from the side?

It’s the one to the left of the chain tensioner and alternator bracket. One is on driver side too.
I cannot think of what it is for. Can it somehow bolt into the timing cover from the side?

Yes definitely got the bolts out after removing cam gears. Easy with the gears removed.

PS. Ignore that hose. It is just pushed to the side.

no. see how that bolts exceeds past the thickness of the front cover?

if you have all the bolts out, cover will come off.

see that sealant? heat that up. Is your tensioner still installed? IF so remove it, that's what it wont come off! hahaha

There's bolts under the pan too if i'm not mistaken. It's been a while but it for sure has to come off because you are going to want clean the mating surfaces and you'll be cursing like a sailor trying to re-install cover if you don't take it off....

Thanks on all points. I haven’t tried to remove it yet. Got to get the oil pan off first. I just saw those bolts and wondered if the timing cover somehow has a step inside and the bolts into it. I will remove the tensioner too.

Anyone have an idea what These bolts on the sides are for? They bolt through the block and aren’t holding on anything.
