Dreaded P0016 & P0017

cams
Have a 2006 E350 with 155,000 miles on it. Balance shaft has already been replaced a few years back. Started getting p0016 & 17 codes. pulled cam sensors and rotated engine to 305 degrees. cam markings look spot on to me. any ideas?

Did you replace the camshaft adjuster magnets when the balance shaft was done? It might just be that.

yes the magnets were replaced at the time of the balance shaft replacement. also replaced them last week....was hoping for a cheap fix but nothing on this car falls under that category.

Unhappy Confusion e350 with P0016 and POO17 codes

Question - I bought a 2006 e350 with under 75,000 - it drives fine but when I took it for an inspection to register in Oregon they said the engine light was on that the system was showing the P0016 and POO17 codes. I told them the engine light was not on which they said was a separate problem. After lots of work including replacing the magnets, it was determined that the camshafts need to be replaced. I began to this that the dealer (independent near Sacramento) knew of the program but did not disclose. I decided to take it to the dealer for a diagnostic to see if they could tell me when these codes originally surfaced - they said that they first showed at just over 13,000 miles - if this is the case, I'm wondering how the car ever passed a smog test after that - any and all thoughts would be welcome.

Sounds like you got scammed by the guy selling the car. Take it back and see if you can get your money back. Usually not being able to pass smog is good grounds to get your money back or threaten to sue. The check engine light should come on the first time you put the key in the ignition, all the lights on the dash should come on before you start it. If not, it's because one of the bulbs is either out or removed...

Thanks for your reply - I tried returning he played dumb and said it passed smog and he wasn't aware of codes - I researched and in California, dealers can have the car smogged up to two-years prior - this car showed that it passed smog in March of this year - not sure how based on what the dealer said today.

What do you mean by safe? People have reported driving on it for thousands of miles because they didn't want to pay the $3k-7k estimated repair costs for the balance shafts repair. But eventually what happens is that it gets so bad that you'll try to start it one day and it won't start. Sometimes it's possible it's something else so you should at least get it diagnosed to make sure it's the balance shafts and not something else that's much cheaper to repair.

Just out of curiosity, what else could it be other than a balance shaft or stretched timing chain? I have the codes, but my dealer is convinced its neither, and diagnosed it as the actual cam adjusters/actuators that likely "froze." Not sure if this makes sense, but live data shows that the right camshafts never change their degree position while the engine is running, so maybe it is.

You ever get that sorted? I have issue with data stream frozen on the one side.
