ESM module faulty- can I buy used?

hi guys,
dad has a e240 and apparently car has a faulty electronic selector module as diagnosed by mechanic. Basically doesn’t want to turn on or even disingage out of “P” position when ignition is on. (Also has ESP and Abs fault on dash).

Anyways can we buy a matching used ESM module and is it just plug and play? Or do we need brand new which must be coded to his Vin....

also if anyone would know Part number for the module it would be much much appreciated.

More than likely plug & play, worst case scenario would need to clear any/all stored fault codes running quick test using MB diagnostics. Either part # used should be fine. https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart...eplacement.htm

UPDATE:
dad is still having issues. Car at times will start but still not able to get transmission out of “P”. Also throws ABS and ESP fault on dash....

anyways we sent the shifter to a company who can test them and repair and it came back all clear. They don’t think it’s faulty.

Any idea what else is connected to the shifter than may give these symptoms:

1) car will be in ignition mode all fine but doesn’t crank or turn on
2) when it does turn on it won’t come out of P
3) throwing abs and esp fault

could it be the abs/esp module? If I buy second hand one does it have to be coded or is it plug and play??

Thanks guys

It will be considerably more cost effective to have proper diagnostics done versus just guessing. Listed symptoms are not enough to recommend course of action.

yeah that’s the plan. Once I get back the shifter I’ll hand the car over to mechanic.

But just curious with the modules if they require coding or not?
