There is no need to "put a chip" in the E500, and most other vehicles for that matter. Your ECU (Car's Computer) can be reprogrammed via the OBD2 port.

The reason why RENNTech's software is more expensive is because of the following major reasons:

1) Specialists - RENNTech spends a lot of hours to learn how a Mercedes Benz engine is to be tuned (unlike other software companies who do every car on the road).

2) Your E500's software is remapped specific only to your car. You do NOT get a generic software as others do. Your current adaptive software is downloaded (via the OBD2 port) and becomes the baseline for modifications to the new software map.

3) Mercedes Benz releases stock software revisions almost every quarter for enhancing your engines performance. Only RENNTech gives assurance that you get both the MB revision with their remap for as long as you request it at no additional charge.

4) Should the dealer accidentally destroy your RENNTech software, just call your RENNTech dealer and they would be more than happy to reload your remapped software at no charge.

5) There is no need to UPS or FedEx your ECU box to RENNTech in Florida, for as long as there is a dealer in your area that is equipped with the OBD2 programmer onsite.

I have the software on our E55 and E500's... phenominal is all I can say!

So Renntech does not use a chip...they only reprogram the ECU? Or is that really what chipping is? New to this stuff...

Is this the renntech being referrenced: http://www.renntechmercedes.com/ ??? They talk about removing the ECU on their site?? Anyone know a dealer in the LA area?

Thanks.

Right. Renntech dealers can flash the ECU via the OBD2 port onsite. If you rather but right through RennTech in Florida, you can FedEx your ECU module to them and they will flash it and FedEx it back.

Anyone know if there is any hand held units out there that you can program yourself by plugging into the OBD2 (ie. shiftpoints, raise rev limiter, recal A/F, timing, etc)? Coming from a C5, there were serveral portable hand held power programmers (LS1 Edit, TTS PPIII, Preditor, Hypertech, etc). Suprised there isn't one for the W211s.

Just take out the ECU yourself, mail to Renntech, they will finish the same day and mail you back. I heard it takes about 2 days - not complicated at all, and you don't need to find a local dealer to do it at all - hopefully saved you some time.
