Incidentally, I went to dinner tonight, and had a lot of photographic/video equipment in the trunk... and I was able to lock it with the key. Somewhat reassuring, I guess. 
I highly recommend that anyone who doesn't have this feature, should look into retrofitting it. If anyone is interested in giving this a try, I will research the appropriate differences (I will need someone's VIN who doesn't have it), and then will come back with a parts list and make sure that they are available and at what cost.
