Exclamation Front Suspension Clunking noise going over bumps.

Hi everyone,

I have been chasing this front suspsion noise for the time that I have owned the car. The noise usually happens when going over medium sized bumps and sometimes small ones. The noise is a clunking noise and almost sounds like a component is loose. So far I have replaced Lower ball joints, Upper control arms, and just recently sway bar links. Any help would be greatly apreciated because this noise is driving me crazy Thanks, Chris.

Make sure the bolts that connect the sway bar links to the bar itself are TIGHT. I mean super TIGHT. I just did links myself and had to tighten the connecting bolt again because of this issue. Now, its silent. I just didnt have them tight enough.

Double check your brake pads! If your break pads are not the right size the smallest offset will create a noise. (As I have experienced this)
just slowly creep forward and dap the breaks then reverse and press the brakes. Then repeat by going forward and dab the breaks and you should hear that clunking noise if this is the issues.

Hope this helps

The spring control arm in the front. The ball joint that attaches to the strut, check that out. When it goes bad, the symptom is a clunk sound that is impossible to find!

It's a 4matic. One piece lower control arm (only one ball joint)

I believe its something like 55ft lbs. I just wrench them down as tight as I can with a pair of wrenches.

Sorry for the long response I finally got around to tightening thoes bolts and the noise is still there. Any other thoughts? I was thinking that could it be the shocks are completely worn?

There are some long threads out there about replacing the sway bar bushings and the lower control arm bushings. I believe in some videos, people pry against them with a bar to see if there's any play in the bushing. The lower control arm no one makes besides MB so it's cheaper to just replace the bushings unless they happen to be bent. And yes, I suppose it could also be the strut and the strut mount. If the mileage is up there, probably time to replace those too. Too bad no one makes a quick strut for it.

What does the strut attach to? At the bottom, it attaches to a control arm. The part it attaches to can go bad and cause a clunk sound.

I had this same issue after a brake pad change. Bought "premium" non-OEM pads, but there would be a clicking sound going forward or backward to a full stop. I did not realize until someone commented on this forum; if pads are off by even a millimeter they will move around in the caliper and make noise. When put in Mercedes pads there was no sound!

Are you sure it is the front? My wife drove our w211 for a few years and when she had a clunk she swore it was the front - I changed all parts and then realized it was in the rear. Hope you find out what your issue is.
