Any reason not to Rain-X

Anyone have any reasons not to use rain-x on the car?

I love it!!! No need to use my wipers. The heavier it rains...the faster I wanna drive as I watch the beads of water just slide off my windshield!! :v

It also provides a small level of protection against pitting from debris (dust).

I loathe the stuff. At night when it's necessary to use the wipers, it produces a translucent smear that's very hard to see through.

Question Rain, what's that?

W211 Ryda,

When is the last time you saw it rain around here? :v

I agree with you 100%. When it does occasionally rain out here in God's country, Rain X is the only way to fly, period.

Question Translucent smear?

Could that translucent smear be from the windshield not being squeeky clean when you first applied the product?

The glass really must be absolutely spotless for the stuff to work properly.

Don't you have a lot of bugs in the summer time there in your location also? Maybe bug grease being smeared back and forth?

Congrats on your upcoming torquer!

I don't like the stuff either. I found that as it wears off, it smears leaving an obvoius area where the wiper wore it down. And as the above poster observes, it can get really bad for night driving.

I'm not sure of its value; clean wiper blades work fine for me.

I love it!

I started using Rain-X after a day in very heavy rain in my E320. The single wiper could not keep the windshield clear to the point I almost had to stop on the side of the road. It was so bad a Cadillac passed me! I then started using it and have continued to do so with all of my vehicles. I have not had any smearing problems, and it is not obvious that it is there until water hits the windshield, beads up, and rolls off. Great stuff!

I've found that the Rain-X additive (or Rain-X fluid) for the windshield washer is better than applying Rain-X. No smears. And since it applies a little bit every time you use your washer, its less likely to have streaky spots and it also takes no effort to keep it applied.

I have used it on my cars for quite some time, and have never had problems with it. I also swear by the stuff, as it made driving in mist much easier. My Lexus before this had a permanent silicon coating on the windshield that made it so that you did not have to apply any Rain-X, and that worked wonderfully, as well.

On my other car it seems that it eats away (the oil in it) or whatever it is at the wipers and it leaves rubber on the window so when it rains I can't see through it as it is a bunch of greasy smears. I hate it..

I also find that Rain-X dissolves the wipers and makes them work worse, and leaves a residue on the windshield. Yes, even with Rain-X, there are times when it is necessary to use the wipers, which eventually leads to their destruction.

I find it works well on side and rear windows and mirror glass, so-so on windscreen as get a sort of smearing/fogging effect in cold weather. It is kind of cool to be able to drive in rain with a clear screen and your wipers off though :-)

I agree with scorchie, I have had best luck just using wipers and Zaino Z12 glass polish to polish the glass with, I get streak free wipes and no ghosting of water droplets that have been etched on the glass.

I applied the rain x last weekend and had the car in the rain for the first time last night. The wipers were skipping accross the windshield... Why is that? Will it go away?

I don't like Rain-X because bugs end up smearing on the windshield.

My buddy is a detailing guru and he applies some sort of epoxy to windshields. I guess it lasts years. Rain doesn't fly off like it does with Rain-X though.

I use the Zaino product every 90 days or so when I re-clay bar and the complete detail job- In between I use Invisible Glass. Seems to work fine for me. Invisible Glass also works well on the tinted windows my girls smudge every time they enter/exit.

In which proportion do you shake it?

How much aditive you put for each litre of winshield fluid?

I have the bottle but no instructions.

Best Regards.
