Pulley Mod for w211
Has anyone ever tried one? The concept makes sense, but I haven't heard any feedback from anyone for the new E-class. Any engine warranty issues?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I am sure there would be. I saw a E55 that had a larger pulley installed (if I remember correctly) and they refused him.. He had a vid of his blown engine.

For the supercharged engines (unless that was an older E55), the pulley drives the supercharger harder to produce more boost. For the normally aspirated engines, the pulleys underdrive the water pump, alternator and power steering pump by about 10%, which I guess results in less load on the engine (my speculation). Either way, I'm sure MB wouldn't like it, and perhaps why I haven't heard of anyone with a W211 that has made these mods.

I did read a thread about that somewhere. It may have been in the E55 forum although I do remember there was some issue with either the theory of it or something.. Do a search.

The problems with a small underdrive pulleys is the surge or the dimming of lights. I had one in my C5 (ASP Pulley) and found that it was not a problem. Gaines are probably minimal (claimed 1 tenth off the 1/4 mile) but every little thing helps! I would be interested.

The whole reason this topic even came up was that Evosport was having a sale on these here:
http://www.evosport.com/product/perf...ml#evo_pulleys
Not a whole lot off, just 10%. In California, that only covers our sales tax.

Lionhead.. what's a surge? why would it cause the dimming of lights?
I called Evosport. They claim that the pulley kit will produce about 8 to 10 hp. But, I called around the local Mercedes Benz specialized shops for installation price. They all told me that pulley will only work for supercharged/kompressor cars. They don't see how changing to a different material, lighter weight(10 lbs based on the Evosport sales) will increase any horsepower.. Do you know how and why Evosport think differently?

The reason why they work is that by under driving the water pump, etc., which is driven by the engine, less power is used, and in essence more power is left to drive your wheels (i.e., more efficient). Think of when you turn on your air conditioner, you feel a slight drain in the powertrain (at least more noticeable in older cars).
The dimming refers to the fact that there is less overall output from the alternator since you are underdriving it by 10% or so.

I see... so does that make turning the steering wheel harder??
Hey, CalBenzo. I am interested in getting it.. do you think they will give us discount if we buy it together? when are you planning on getting it? or do you plan on getting it? You are the handyman. are you gonna install it yourself? Evosport charges $285 to install it!!! they said 3 hr labor!!!!!!
Oh, one more question.. how do those same size pulley underdrive the engine?

I called Evosport, and they mentioned that their pulleys appear identical to the OEM, and would be hard to distinguish. He also mentioned that he was not aware of anyone having waranty issues. Who knows whether that's BS though.
Regarding a group buy, I think it would take a lot more than 3 people for a group buy, especially since it is already on sale. They would probably be more receptive if we had them install it since they would make more money on labor charges.
May take the plunge, but haven't decided yet.

I also heard the same thing from the sale's rep. he told me that they are the same size as the oem parts. BUT! it does say EVOSPORT on it though..... wouldn't that be a little obvious?...
anyway, I think it's worth a shot. I will call him again see if he will give us any discount if we are buying 3 or more.. maybe no sale's tax if pay cash!! he he. Calbenzo, are you thinking about driving it down here to get it installed? do you know how long it will take to do a job like this? is it easy?

Anyway, you are right, the EVOSPORT marks are on all the pulley's so it is a bit conspicuous. I may ask the dealership then, since it is not worth voiding the warranty for an 8-10 hp gain.
The system also comes with a new belt. If the pulleys are truly the same diameter, but just lighter weight, why would a new belt be necessary? Could the belt be lighter weight? Not sure whether that would have much affect on performance anyway? Could also be for liability or reliability in that the belt should always be changed after any changes?

ones too fast according to CHP!
Hey all,
The pulleys are not the same size. They are slightly larger. This is how the underdrive is acheived.
Also, you will not void your warranty with pulleys, that is illegal as per the Magnusson Moss Federal Warranty Act.
Thanks
Brad

I'm in!
About how much are we looking at?
AND I still want a lighter crank pulley! Come on Evosport make one for us.
You can't do any worse than Mercedes (a certain range of stock crankshaft pulleys have the damper coming loose and damaging parts in the engine bay).

huh... now I am a little confused...
Calbenzo. Mike at EVOSPORT told me the way the underdrive is achieved is because the light weight pulley... the pulley size are the same... I questioned at the time how 10 lbs lighter in weight can make a 8-10 hp increase... all the Mercedes Benz specialized shops told me the same thing..
I talked to EUROREV people.. they said.. changing the pulley will knock off the balance and cause engine problem in the long run(after a year or 2) I don't know if that's true or not. 3rd, now that you have the parts.. you can clearly tell that they are aftermarket modification parts?? shoot.... that's not good. have you touch it yet??! Wait!! I thought we are all gonna get it together!!
