Don't let them charge you more than an hour. It takes about 10 minutes, the only tools are a T27 long socket, and a hex 10mm long socket. A breaker bar helps, and having two people helps if you're not strong enough to undo the center bolt alone.

TIA Scorchie, I couldn't find much info on your site.

Well, I got an appointment to install the wood wheel. I have read all the threads on this and have decided to do it.

Due to the length of time with the problem that I had with my audio (see Harmon Kardon Logic 7), MBUSA will give me $600 credit towards purchase/install.

So $200 out of pocket seem like a good deal, especially when so highly recommended by this forum.

FYI:

I purchased the stone/burl wheel from MBenzNl. Took only a week to get it delivered from overseas and 25-30 minutes to install. It's a steal at $450 and I'd highly recommend it to anyone considering this upgrade. Adds some additional class to the interior appearance.

Those of you that have a walnut wood wheel, is the wood on the wheel EXACTLY the same shade of wood as the other wooded areas?

Does your wheels wood not match the existing wood in your car???? I hear this could be a problem and have read a few posts here of some people going through a few wheels (before install) to find a "perfect" match from the dealer... Its wood, I feel getting a perfect match is almost impossible after the fact.
I would love to upgrade mine but at dealer prices I can't bring myself to pull the trigger.

No, not an absolute perfect match but in all honesty you got to look pretty hard to see the difference. The dealer installed mine as an add-on when I purchased from stock. I think the only way to circumvent this is to choose the wood/leather wheel as a factory install when ordering new. Oddly though, I had the cup holder cover replaced months later because it developed a hairline crack over time and it matched the bordering wood perfectly.

I have the black wood and it is off a bit from the trim.. I like it.. It actually makes it look like real wood and not plastic.. It is one of the great things about wood and leather..

Well, I am interested in hearing from all of you if your wood wheel has developed any cracks. My 1991 300E started to develop serious cracks in it Zebrano wood panels. I had them all replaced years ago and they seemed to last.

So the reason I have not upgraded to the nice wheel is that I am afraid of spending all that money and have the wood crack!!! I really think that the temperature extremes here in Colorado are not good for varnished wood. However, the wood panels on my 300E cracked when I was still in Florida.

Bare in mind, my cars have always been garaged and I always use the sunshade on the windshield when I park in the sun.

Does anyone have any cracks yet?

Steve

So far, the wheel is fine (knock on wood ). For the most part the car is garaged but that’s not to say it hasn’t spent a fair amount of time parked in a lot in 100 plus temperature and sometimes forgetting to install the windshield shade. However, as previously mentioned, the wood trim covering the popup cup holder developed a hairline crack for some reason. When replaced they said this was their first incident of this kind as it concerned cracked interior wood trim for the new e-class.

Are there any detailed instructions posted anywhere? I wanted to do this a while back but was scared off by a dealer technician who told me the airbag is not to be messed with!

Thanks.

I would just hate for you (or anyone) to get in an accident and the air bag not work.. You should consider getting them to do it, include it in the price or something.

That's true. However, removal and install are really very easy. The airbag has a snap connection that locks when properly connected. Pretty hard to screw it up. Also, it is just connected by two T27 bolts from behind the cover. Again, it is pretty simple to make sure that is properly seated and tightened. As Scorchie mentioned, the hard part is breaking the center nut that mounts the steering wheel to the column.

Another bit warning, however, is to not turn on the car with the key if you have the air bag electrically disconnected. The system will sense that the air bag is not connected, and will register a malfunction. Then you will have to have the system reset through Stardiagnose. Simply reconnecting the airbag connection will reset the "malfunction", even though the bag likely works (although I don't know that one for sure .)

I got mine from Steve (MBenzNL) and he did the install in about 2 minutes.... graunted hes done like 50. But anyone with limited ability can do this. 10 minutes is plenty as described by scorchie, with the right tools. My black birdseye didnt match perfect, it was bore brown in tint instead of the green. But barely noticeable. I like it more actually.

Mine was ordered from the factory, and no it is not the same exact shade and grain. I believe they use a different wood on the wheels stained as closely as possible, which is a harder wood, less prone to dent/scratch/nick from rings, watches, etc.
