I don't get it. Didn't it come with the car? Standard 211s all have a cup holder like the one in your picture. Did it break?

... unless s/he's in a country where the cupholder isn't standard equipment. People often omit useful information like that in their posts.

Good point. The thing is not well designed anyway. Left side holder is too small for anything bigger than a soda can and then it's too deep for easy use. The right side swing out holder will allow only a small bottom cup. Better they should bag this rig altogether and put an MP3 holder and plug in.

Hi Oslo, Yes, like yours. I've seen it before. Nice job. I'd like it to be installed so that the cover could close over it as well. Yours might be OK in Norway but I have a feeling the MP3 would be ripped off mighty quickly here in the US!

It takes a split second to remove it. If I mounted it further down, it would be impossible to read the display due to the angle.

Oslo,

Is that a special auto install kit or anything? Is there some special platform underneath the dock connector to adjust the height in the tray?

I should get my IPOD soon, so I'm not familiar with any of the accessories.

Thanks,

If you do a search under cup holders you will find the part number and price.

Good luck,

Very nice Oslo!

Ready for all my questions!

Did you just fabricate the bracket?

How is the bracket mounted in the tray, or do you actually need to due to the depth?

Is that a special line-in cable, and was routing the cable from the cup holder to the glove box pretty doable, or a major dash dissassembly?

Thanks,

A body shop made it for me. Payed them 3 USD

I used velcro so that it can easly be removed without any trace. It cannot be mounted deeper, since the angle then would prevent to see the display

No, its a standard cable with a stereo minijack in both ends. But in addition, you will need this: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=149006

Then you must have a short cable (standard with stereo mini jacks) from the Belkin to the AUX-input in the glove box.

Thanks again Oslo. Regarding the cigarette lighter adapter, is that only necessary if you want to charge the unit while driving? Hence, if not, you could just rely on the mini connection with the Aux in the glove, correct?

Thanks,

I was just playing around with the useless cup holder, and removed it for installation for my Ipod. Anyway, the whole slot is actually much more useful with the cup holder part removed. I'm sure this has probably been mentioned by somebody, but I'm leaving mine out regardless of whether I mount the Ipod in there or not. At least a typical 12 oz can can fit in there without spilling.

You must use the Belkin adapter. Otherwise you will get crappy sound. The Belkin kit has an amplifier that is needed when you connect an Ipod to any car stereo

Hey Oslo,

I just got my Ipod, which is one of the newer ones. It seemed to work fine through the docking station just using the line-out without any need for another amplifier. I'm not sure whether it matter or not that the one I have is the latest generation?

In fact, the line-out is more of a preamp out since the volume of the Ipod has no affect. It does when I connect it to the headphones connector on the top. This is fine with me however since a booster amp sometimes introduces additional distortion, and we all know that the HK system can't be pushed too hard.

Thanks for you help. I'm looking to fabricate a bracket similar to yours.

Thanks,

Hey Oslo,

I have a question regarding your install. I did buy the Belkin Auto Kit, and am using the dock like your install. However, when I use the dock, the 3.5 mm line-in at the Belkin cigarette charger unit does not work. It does work when I bypass the dock and use the Belkin connector to directly connect to the Ipod, however.

So, I was wondering how you were able to get yours to work?

Thanks!

I could rant for pages on the uselessness of the cupholder and how arrogant MB is to ignore what other automakers have catered to for years-their customers' actual needs and requirements.

Something wrong must have happened to your dock. I use the Belkin to connect to the dock, and a 3.5 from the Belkin kit to the AUX-input. Try to borrow another dock to check.

Hey Oslo,

Thanks. I have the new Ipod that has the same controls as the mini Ipod. I wonder if that is any different. The line-in from the dock works, but than that bypasses the amp in the Belkin unit.

I'll have to see if I can get a hold of another dock.

Thanks,
