Got my E320CDI at last! -Question on noise
OK its my first diesel, I expect the diesel knock. Although it does seem quite loud when pulling away and in traffic when touching the accelerator at low speeds. I am wondering if part of the noise is the deep roar of the 3.2 engine size and diesel combined or may be that the new engine has to settle in.
Seems a little more noisy than the test drive model I took out before ordering. How do I know my diesel knock is normal for a car of this calibre?
maybe I'll get use to it
Its all so new and it is a great car perhaps I'm expecting too much ? I think to myself that if I can hear this from inside, does thsi great looking car sound like a an old van passing by

I picked up my E320 CDI on Friday and I would label it as very quiet for a diesel. Maybe a few db noisier than a petrol motor. Nowhere near the noise of an American pickup truck with a diesel (which I have). In a nutshell car is overall very quiet.
My concern is with fuel mileage at this point. Ran 80% highway at 70-80mph and computer showed only 27 mpg. I do know that my truck motor fuel mileage jumped after a few thousand miles as motor got broken in so expecting the same here.

I have had my car for 2 years and there is no doubt it is noisier than petrol models. But it took my wife 2 months before she asked "is this a deisel" ! I hadn't told her............
The mpg improves dramatically.
I drive hard and get 33-35. On a 80mph expect 40mpg. drive like an old man and you can get 50mpg. Thats UK gallons.
Drove to the South of France this year and did 1000 miles to get there, at an average speed of 75mph (which means 100 + for alot of the journey), with lots of overtaking and therefore throttle, and averaged 38mpg.
The mpg will always read poor when the engine is cold, and so if you are doing a regular trip where the car hardly warms up your average will be lower.
Enjoy the car. Mine was my first diesel and like you my expectations were huge. I have no regrets whatsoever and love the way it pulls.
Next car on order is the new CLS 320cdi for next year.

I couldn't have summed it up better than above. The noise actually is "music" to my ears and have become accustomed to the throaty growl when accelerating hard. As for the fuel mialeage , it has been excellent. I'm averaging 27 mpg city, 36-38 mpg highway. I can't wait until ULSD gets here, maybe with Euro like quality diesel, we will be able to achieve slightly better mileage and better emissions. I have seen some very mild smoke w/ heavy acceleration beyond 90mph. Enjoy the ride

'Tis my understanding that when using Arco ULSD here in California, one will experience at least a 2 percent reduction in fuel economy.
I do not know exactly how much less the fuel economy was when I used ULSD in my '02 Jetta Wagon for 25K miles, but after I stopped using Arco and began using the regular CARB fuel, my fuel mileage did improve slightly.

Perhaps thats why the big truckers don't like it?

My limited experience tells be there is no discernable diesel noise, expect at idle. That, noise, always more noticeable outside the car the inside it, is most noticable when the engine internals are cold, which may occur when the engine water temperature is still not down.
Overall, no complaints here and in Germany alot of cars make that noise!!!
P.S.
This German kezboard is driving me crayz!!! (z and y are reversed).
