2009 E class Water Leak

Hi all,

Hopefully someone can chime in - recently walked into water leaking into the rear drivers side floor. Sunroof drains are working correctly so I replaced the windshield cowling since it showed some age.

Water is still coming in after this. Water is coming in through the drivers side kick panel speaker hole. I can literally watch it drip in from there.

This happens when I pour water on the drivers side cowling area. The water comes both from under the fender liner, but also into that speaker hole.

I have checked also the drains from the engine bay fuse area drains and they are clear of debris.

this is the area where I pour water into.

I have posted this also in the amg W211 chat, however, I believe I might have more success in this forum.

Some checks: all expansion rivets especially if reused (photo 1) common problem - part # 1239900592, mounting clips (second photo) allowing tight seal 2119880081, and last crimped hose if need be.

Hey thanks for the response! All this has been checked and looks in order.

I believe the issue is most likely with a chassis drain and not really the water collector.

I believe this drain is being cause by a chassis or frame water drain. Does anyone know where they live on the w211?

While you are searching for the leak source, make sure you are not drawning your FRONT-SAM.

Pop the SAM cover and look for any signs of moisture coming in from the harness at the rear side closest to firewall.

You need that unprotected module to stay DRY or else you'll experience weird things happening, battery drain etc...

thank you for the suggestion - luckily all looks nice and dry and there with no signs of water.

I need to figure out where there is a drain in the car (chassis or frame) somewhere between the front and rear of the rocker panel (side skirt) as I can see that when I pour water on the passenger side (no leaks) in the passenger side windshield water collector water rapidly comes out on the front and some little bit in front of the rear tire.

This is not happening on the drivers side (only water comes out in the front fender liner but not in front of the rear wheel. The other bit is coming out inside of the car through the speaker hole. I suspect there is a clog somewhere in the rocker panel side skirt area of the drivers side.

I think you have this rain leak issue pretty well cornered. Down by the end of waterways Benz uses ruber flaps that become stiff and gluey..

The fix is to find a way to snake through the conduits. Clothe hangers are too stiff to go around turns...

Water intrusions can oxidize electricals near the A pilar and Front-SAM.

So I’ve found the chassis drains on the car. It seems there are a few amongst the frame.

There are about 3 on each side (they are small slits). There definitely is an obstruction somewhere in the inner channeling where the car channels the water. Passenger side I can see water come out of slit, drivers side no water (limited amounts) the rest overflows out of speaker channel.

These slits can only be seen once you remove the lower section covering of the cars and become 100% accesible once side skirts are removed.

At this point the car is going to the dealer.

Update - took it to a Mercedes body shop. Apparently there is a DTB out for the glue at the seams of the sheet metal where the water drains.

Needless to say I am extremely surprised and concerned with this being an issue on a Mercedes. Is it typical for these costs to be of the owner? Or is this something that is covered by warranty?

On further review it seems that this is not applicable to the 63. Bummer.

Picked up the car today from the dealer. They applied the DTB and essentially explained that even though my specific W211 model doesn’t apply the DTB could very well be the solution to it.

Needless to say ey were right and this fixed the issue. I felt that if anyone else ends up in my shoes they can see the fix.

Thanks all!

Nooo, thank you !👍
Water intrusion is a serious Benz topic every owner should stay on top of.

Benz should come with built-in water sensors... or we could wire that in?? (9V Jacuzzi leak sensor)
