Auto transmission service

Hi
Is it advisable to get the auto transmission on my E280 serviced? I have read on multiple oil guides that the transmission is filled with "lifetime" fluid.
I have owned 2 cars in the past with the same status, BUT I have also had them serviced with a filter change and fluid replacement.
What do people recommend? Car is 2007 E280 with just over 84400km travelled.

You have 722.999 transmission in 2009 'MBUSA' revised ATF/filter change to every 40,000 miles/4 years whichever comes first I suggest you follow this schedule.

Hey with regards to the transmission pan bolts, my local auto trans mechanic states that the bolts need to be replaced every time the pan is removed and fitted back again.

Is this true? I've taken a quick look at all the PDFs that @konigstiger supplied above and can't see anything about new bolts???

Replace all bolts? That seems extreme. Is that because they have a special LockTite coating? Can you just clean them and add LockTite?

Yes, you can clean them and add LockTite, and probably reuse them. They are M6x40 screws, and torqued in two stages, first to a 4 Nm and second stage to 180 degrees. I doupt they would stretch beyond reuse. But then again, there are only six of them, so they are not too expensive to buy.

I took my transmission valvebody out today, and wondered why those screws need replacing, as they are not in huge strain or anything. But I was just looking for filter and gasket, and noticed that spare parts listing says that those screws are made out of aluminium, so yes, they need to be replaced.

Not worth saving a bit, and risk breaking the bolt when reused. The time to extract the bolt out, plus the pain , is not worth it.

I did the transmission service on our 2009 e350 maybe a year ago. konigstiger posted excellent information!

You can buy a garden fluid pump sprayer at Lowes for like $15 and then use it to pump the fluid into the transmission pan. It is extremely helpful if you have access to STAR to monitor the trans fluid temp.

Also make sure you get to the torque converter bolt. That will drain another 4qts of fluid. It is also recommended to change that bolt out for new when you remove it.

I honestly thought it was going to be a much harder process doing it than what it was. Lots of threads are on the topic. I think I posted a helpful link to the guide on the forum linked to another chassis.
