Is the swirl flap repair necessary?

Hello all,

I got a swirl flap code and after doing some research here I see that it’s a common issue. I had planned on repairing the broken actuator assembly but the car runs fine. M272. I don’t have any oil loss or idle issues and everything seems normal. I can move the linkage by hand and I have the flaps set in the ACTIVE position. Can anyone tell me if there is a noticeable difference in performance before and after the fix? I stab the throttle pretty often and it goes jussssst fine lol. I don’t want to possibly create a problem trying to gain 10hp at the top of the rev range. Thanks

I do not have personal experience so don't quote me, but I have heard in some instances the plastic breaks apart and can potentially end up inside the engine. Personally, I would spend the $700 or whatever it is on FCP Euro's IM replacement kit to correct the issue.

My father helped run the parts department of a Mercedes dealership for ~30 years. He said he had never heard of the plastic breaking off and going into the engine. I still spent the $700 on the manifold - it's not that much $$ and I'd really kick myself if I grenade my engine over saving $500 or whatever the difference is.

if there’s no movement of the flaps then it’s unlikely for them to break. Either way, that’s not addressing my question.

Is the difference between having the mechanism working and NOT working noticeable?
The car runs great. If I take off the intake I run the risk of messing something up or creating a problem where there isn’t one. So…. Is the possible gain with the risk?

It's not very common but people have reported the engine damage from the broken flaps falling into the engine. If you can move the lever easily, maybe it's not that gummed up. I replaced one intake and it was hard to move the lever and it didn't bounce back after moving it. The plastic is the weak part and that's supposed to break first instead of replacing it with metal. That would just mean that when it gets gummed up, the metal will force the plastic and make the flaps more likely to break off. There's several youtube videos on how to replace the intake. Just need to be careful. I did get the intake from FCPeuro, one set of gaskets was perfect, the other one was a little bent and didn't stick too well. You do need to make sure the gasket lines up afterwards, easy for it to slide out of place when putting it back on. You should at least change the oil separator and breather cover, those seem to go all the time.

thanks for the response. After playing with it and doing some testing today I found that even if I try and set it for high rpm, it moves back after you accelerate. The car runs great and I’m not going to upset the apple cart. I’m going to leave it alone for now and focus on some other things first.

Hi @brains646

Was wondering what ended up happening after you didn't fix this. I am in a similar boat where the car runs great, and I don't want to potentially cause issues with this fix.
