Extended Warranty "Q"

I have 2 months to purchase the MB Extended Warranty but what is the advantage of purchasing the MB Extended Warranty now instead of wait until the end of the manufacturer's warranty and purchase an aftermarket warranty at that time. Because I'm not sure how long I'm going to keep the W211, my thinking is if I decide to keep the car after the manufacturer's warranty, I'll just purchase an aftermarket warranty at that time. Your thoughts........

Side note: We have the MB Extended Warranty on our '01 E320 4matic (purchase within the 1st year of the vehicle) and so far they have replaced the MAF under the Extended Warranty.

Aftermarket warranty companies can AND DO go out of business (a big one went out fairly recently) leaving you with only a piece of paper. If MB USA goes out of business, we're all in deep trouble.

MBs warranty leaves out some important things, IMO, but its the safest game in town.

Wow.... It's been almost a year since delivery???? Man how time goes quick.... As far as the warranty, well I have to agree with Mr.45... Not sure if your negotiating power is still intact since you waited to purchase in the final hour, but I know your full aware that hardly anyone pays full price.... I paid $1875.00 from MB for the "full monty" at time of purchase... Goodluck L.H

I just purchased a used 04 and also got the extended StarMark warranty. This one is fully refundable if not used before the warranty starts and is prorated once it's in effect. Makes it risk free. Things that are excluded are the Audio system, NAV, belts, hoses, brakes, paint, interior leather, plastics. However with all the advanced electronics (and bugs), air ride etc there's a lot to go wrong. Right now labor is about $100 per hour and will only go up. Oh yea the exchange rate between the Euro and the dollar is also in the dumper so who knows about parts cost.

Bottom line I think it's a great deal.

FYI -- I just bought my 05 320 yesterday and I did buy the warranty for $2000. They gave me a long song and dance about how the price of the MB warranty was going to double within the next month or so. Due to the problems that I had with my C320 I was planning on buying it anyway. But, if you're debating about whether or not to buy it now or later, it would be good to verify the possible price increase, one way or the other.

I just bought a extended warranty before my 1 year anniversary on an 04 E55. It costs 3100 from the dealership. They also told me it was refundable if I didn't keep the car after the lease was up.

3100 from the dealership?!?!?! Damn, wish I had purchased mine when I first bought my car. I'm nearing my 1 year as well.

I did not purchase the extended warranty in my first 12 months. I just gotta figure MB isn't that far removed from your local Ford or Chevy dealer when it comes to SELLING STUFF! While they do hold the upper hand in terms of the warranty, we have enough dealers around here and online to shop the deal. I think you should be able to negotiate the price of the warranty down after the first year. I bought one on me kid's Explorer and at 40,000 miles it needed a torque converter - part alone was $200 more than I paid for the warranty.

Lionhead - I may be looking to sell the E500. If you know someone local that's interested let me know.

I bought my MB 7yr/100K 0 deductible on my 2003 E-500 for approximately $1800 from LISA MARIE LEHRBAUM
PHONE 530-230-3154 FAX 530-893-1131 E-MAIL lisalehrbaum@chicocourtesy.com

She works for the MB dealer in Chico. I bought my car in the LA area and bought the warranty via phone/email from her. Great service and price.

Spoke with MBUSA and they advised the refund for the extended warranty through MB is 60 days but after the 60 days, each state has their own provisions regarding full refund prior to the extended warranty taking effect. MBUSA also advised the refund is dependant on the state you purchase the extended warranty and not the state you currently reside. Therefore, if I purchase the extended warranty in California, MBUSA advises I will need to process the refund through the dealer I purchase the extended warranty in California. My question is this true and if so can someone advise if California law stipulates a full refund must be granted if the extended warranty hasn't taken in effect. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I always thought the contract (acceptance & sale of) was between you and MB USA in NJ, and not the selling dealer, the contract doesn't mention anything about your selling dealer promising to provide anything, but rather MB USA providing...

I wonder if we can find enough people here to commit to buy a extent warranty (up to 100K), do you think we can have a bulk volume discount from MBUSA?

Thanks!

Actually, your deal would have to be made with an individual dealer, who is free to set his own profit on each contract he sells for MBUSA. (Remember, MBUSA doesn't sell to the public, WE are not their customer, the franchised dealer IS... We are the "end user") The dealer pays MBUSA a price for each contract he buys for resale, and he can charge you whatever he wants (above what he paid for it, or there's no reason to sell it unless he's making so much money on the car you just bought, that no one else would touch!) for each contract. Its just like any part (Not warranty parts) that the dealer buys from MBUSA for their service department to resell, like when you buy splash guards, an extra set of floor mats, etc... he pays wholsale & determines his resale price.

The smart dealer gets as much as he can, while at the same time being aware of the local market, and competition. An out of state dealer will usually sell much cheaper if you bring him a bunch of sales at one time that he would be stealing from dealers out of his trading area... business he never would have had if not for you, and its "found money" to him. No service hassles, no returns, just pure profit.

That's what I thought but after talking to Katherine at MBUSA, she advised MB's policy for full refund is 60 days but after that, it's up to the individual States to set their own laws regarding refunds.

I can understand the "full refund" part for changing your mind on the purchase. After 60 days, its not a "change of mind" and MBUSA should be entitled to pro rate a refund for the unused portion, since the factory & extended warranties run on top of one another... that is, even thouth they call it a 7 year warranty, you really are only getting a 3 year (partial coverage) extension onto the 4 year "factory" warranty. So 3 months down the road, a full refund is not really a fair deal to MBUSA either. I guess with 50 states, they left the haggling for a "change of mind" full refund up to the states involved... after that, there is no discussion about whether it is a full or partial refund.

I do like the bulk discount idea, several people have been asking about it in the different model forums.
