Two different 4-matic front half shafts?

Hello everyone-
I need to replace the front half shafts on my 2004 W211 E500.
The replacements I have are MB OEM used parts BUT differ from the originals-- looks like the original CV joints have a shield that fits into a "socket" that is part of the front wheel bearing.
The replacements do not have this shield... but seem to fit into the bearing correctly.
Does not having the additional shield matter or can this simply be ignored?

See my attached pictures.

Please help..

Many thank yous!

MB front half shafts

Thank you to everyone replying to my query.
I'm not at my garage at the moment (Nov 18) but I will supply vehicle VIN & part #.s to you guys soon's I can.
From consulting the on-line parts book @ everythingbenz.com -- the part #s for those half shafts seem to be correct for this vehicle.
MBUSA says fitment covers range of W211's. including this one.
The axle tone rings line up with the sensor on steering knuckle and shaft seems to fit correctly 'cept that mystery shield.

I let my subscription to ALLDATA lapse-- forgotten if there was a change order issued for the front half shafts on this car.

Once again.

Thank you.

I did this job about a year ago in my car, and if I remember correctly, that shield slides off and is transferred to the new shaft.

Hey Sandygear-- I think your memory has failed you-- The shield "skirts" on the original shafts look like they're either welded or a non-removable component of the CV joint outer housing. The shield cup in the steering knuckle looks like it's pressed in place.

There is another shield disk on the front or wheel bearing side of the CV joint housing. It looks like it's a dirt or oil slinger. It has possibly been pressed on. I can attempt some creative hydraulic pressing to see if they will budge w/o destruction. Then the question is will that fit "properly" on the "new" (2006) shafts? I'm skeptical.

The 4M front axle shaft WIS diagrams that Konigstiger posted in this thread show the same CV joint structure as the 2006 replacement shafts I have. Also mention nothing about removing shields from old axle shaft.

I'm beginning to think that there is no issue here just replace w/ "new" shafts and all will be OK...

Thanks Konigstiger from the MB WIS docs. The 4M front axle shafts" doc shows the "newer" version for the shafts rather than the originals on my W211.

The VIN is: WDBUF83J54X162799

Correct part #s original 2113300001, replaced by 2113301101, replaced by current 2113301701 (no longer available new); recommend replacing pulse ring at same time part # 2033570382.

Howdy Konigstiger-

Very many thanks for the info! Looks like my question(s) have been answered. It's pretty much as I suspected-- that the axles have been changed through the production run of the W211.. and that the "new" version(s) are backwards compatible to the steering knuckle/wheel bearing on my W211 MY..

One last thing-- I'm going to assume that there is no change to the bearing / steering knuckle accepting the new axle shaft.

As per MB's recommendations- I'll install a new impulse ring on each shaft.

Once again many thanks for your help.

Regards,
RJPERLS

Hey Sandygear-
Now I realize it was the impulse ring for the ABS that you're thinking of.
