Jaguar X diesel quieter than MB

My E320 CDI is 6 weeks old. My brother in law picked up his new Jaguar X type 2.0D last week. I was stunned when he started it up. At idle it's noticebly quieter than my 320 and with a gentle touch of the accelerator, the diesel 'tap' is not so apparent.

Hmm...Do I have a problem with my 320? Shoudln't it be at least quiet as the Jag. It is a more refined engine, isn't it? and cost nearly £20k more!

To be honest the Honda 2.0 l iCDTi is the most refined and best diesel engine in its class. If it was in the Mbz it would be a clear winner. But we don't buy engines and the whole car experience is more rewarding.

I would appreciate all the other qualities of ur car and just enjoy it....I'm sure you like the way it looks parked in ur drive. Beats a Honda and jag anytime.

Count your luck. We have absoutely slim pickings here in the US when it comes to diesels.

2.0ltr diesel quieter than a 3.2ltr?? For its size the Jaguar engine is pretty good.

The Ford 2.2ltr diesel gives 137mph 0 -62.5mph 8.7sec
Jaguar 2ltr diesel 129mph 0 - 62mph 9.9sec
Mercedes-Benz C class2.0CDI diesel 129mph 0 - 62mph 11.7sec

The Ford engine is also very quiet, but they are not E-class 211's

So what, the Benz is a real diesel, and YOU HAVE A LOT MORE HORSES IN YOUR STABLE!

The sprinter/vito vans up to 10,000 gross weight have 270 CDI engines. The jag engine is weak in comparison to an E320 CDI.

Besides, with a JAG you better be home before dark, too many electrical problems.

Does Lucas the Prince of Darkness still hold sovereignty at Jaguar?

Now on Honda, that's another story. I have a 1991 Accord I bought 5 years ago for $2700, with 70K miles. It has ice cold A/c, and I have ran it up to 134,000 miles ABSOLUTELY TROUBLE FREE. Talk about cheap reliable transportation. Honda has truly excelled at providing affordable, dependable transportation for the masses. Everything Honda puts out, from Lawnmowers, to Generators, to Cars, to Motorcycles, are truly top notch, well designed, engineered, and built stuff. I love my Benz but I must say that if I had to guess which car would go 150,000 miles with the least amount of issues, it would have to be Honda, hands-down.

European Sprinters come with a vareity of engines but very few have the 5 cylinder engine. They are usually emergency response vehicles, namely ambulance or Police response team vehicles. I was thinking about this 160hp engine but just could not justify it. We have the 130hp 2.2CDI and it's performance is marvellous. On motorways the wife set's the cruise control at 75mph and it will hold that speed on any motorway incline. The largest diesel for the European Vito is the 2.2CDI (top speed 109mph) Not the 5 cylinder variant.

John

CDiken,

You hit the nail on the head on that one with regards to the Honda. They make a lot of engines and each one is just as reliable.
Thats why i have a Honda Civic as my second car just in case the Mbz breaks down or has to go in for something.....I can't wait to book a loan car or rely on dealer to get me into something quick. The Honda just keeps going and has given me trouble free motoring for years.

The new 2.0 iCDTi diesel is well worth looking at.....more of a diesel which behaves like a petrol....well its worth trying out for urself....Accord CDTI engine which give go in the CRV and FRV next year.

Would love to try the Accord Diesel, but that damn Ocean is in between...

But here in the US people learn rather slowly. OK very slowly, and our only 4 choices for diesel are MB, VW, Jeep Liberty, and big trucks.

It is important that MB and VW continue the success of CDI and TDI models, so others like Honda and BMW recognize the strong market and Americans come to like diesel.

This is how bad it is: The BMW X5 diesel is made here in Greenville, SC then loaded on boats and taken away. None sold here. All that would need to be done would be to certify the car (easy).

Selective Service should have as a priority, when young men and women turn 18, they are strapped into a modern diesel and told to drive 5 miles. That's all it would take. Then true mass production of Biodiesel would ensue, and a huge burden on out trade deficit (oil) would be eased.

Add Toyota. I've had four of them with no significant problems and a total of close to 500,000 miles. Honda and Toyota are tops for comfortable, reliable, economical transportation. But for romance .... sorry, no.

Chevy is also very reliable. Never had even minor problem, everything worked as new. I even did oil change after 10k miles, although used regular oil. Transmission was much more responsive, so I almost crashed my MB, because used to except instant downshift. It's pity that Chevy isn't such luxury as MB.

Good point. The problem with Honda is ....nothing. The rationale for their superior over engineering and simplification of mechanicals is that of a cultural phenomenon. The Japanese mindset of failure overwhelms everything they do. From business to fabrication/manufacturing they are driven by two basic principles: 1. Total quality management 2. Total quality product/service. Anything less than this they perceive as failure. Result...outstanding products that are value driven and quality assured. Ie. Honda Motors, Toyota etc. They may not have original concepts but they sure as hell know how to refine an existing idea.
