Radar goes off when i honk

I have a E320 sport. Every time a honk, my passport 8500 goes off indicating i'm getting pinged by a laser... Really weird... can any one enlighten me?

Your 8500 is locked into a frequency of the horns (they are not both the same) and one of them resonates the unit.

The fix is to replace the Passport with a Valentine One :p.

..and then there's my friend Joe, whose Porsche turns on its wipers every time he keys his CB mike.

something i've found annoying with my v1 though is that the laser is set off by cars with flourscent 3rd brake lights. very annoying with the gmc envoys and some bmw 3 series in stop and go traffic.

my old bel850 would go off as laser being detected when I blew the horn on my '72 280 SEL that I had a few years back. That was the only car that it would do it on. I figured it had something to do with the frequency of the horn.

They should really change the name to "Valentine 1 radar and GM SUV detector."

Hmm. Mine doesn't do that. But it's an older model, circa 1994. I can see how that would be a major irritation!

It could be worse.

Years ago, I had an Audi 5000. One day on cruise control, a friend keyed a 2 meter (144 MHz) amateur radio handheld and the car floored the accelerator.

It was consistently reproducible, and we could find certain spots on the dashboard with different behavior (some faster than others).

I'm convinced this is at culpable for at least part of that vehicle's "unintended acceleration" problems. I don't think the mandated solution, a shifter/brake interlock was even relevant.

I was given a 5000 once as a loaner when I brought a Porsche in for servicing. It was a hell of a car. I always thought that Audi got a bad rap on that unintended acceleration problem. What you experienced is very interesting.

Could be a voltage issue- Some detectors

are very sensitive to fluctuations, which often shows up as a laser alert. One of my old BMWs would do this on a V-1. Is the detector tapping into the same circuit as the horn? That would be a tip off. Also, try using a different circuit for power and see if the problem can be reproduced.

Do you have remote sensors installed for it?

See mine of 10/21- Need to first ID the

source of the problem. The fix could be as simple as using another circuit as the power source. Once this is sone, chk w/ the radr detector mfgr. They are often familir w/ the issue and may have a fix if the first, simplert fixes do not work.
