Other than the volume level issue, the iPod music sounds fantastic to my ears. I have about 160 songs loaded in it, mostly oldies, with some 90's music.

If you use the outlet on the docking station, no pre-amplifier is needed.

Thanks for the information. By tweeking around, I found that by turning 'Sound Check' on the iPod to OFF, the volume level improved drastically, so I can switch between AUX, CD, or Radio without changing the same volume level. After setting the Sound Check to OFF, connecting the cable through the docking station line-out (with or without power) improves the volume just a slightly more versus connecting the cable to the headphone outlet on the iPod. The main culprit was just the Sound Check option.
