2006 E Class 350 doesn't know which gear to go into sometimes forward or reverse in D
I am looking to purchase a 2006 E Class 350 which is in very good condition aside from a transmission issue. When you put it into drive it may not do anything, or once in a while it will go into a forward gear of it's choice or even into reverse. The Mercedes dealership says it needs a new transmission which is fine and I am prepared for that. My question is if anyone has had this problem as well and if it was indeed the transmission that was at fault. Could a faulty speed sensor cause this? I just don't want to be in a situation where they are chasing the problem without knowing for sure what the issue is which will cost a bunch of money.

Try a transmission reset first (which is free). If you have a good scanner, you can see which gear the car thinks it needs to be in. I have a mb carsoft v3 which is able to show this.
