7G Transmission Questions - 2006 E500
I have a couple of transmission question, searched the forum, but wondering what the current views / options are …
The Good:
- When the transition is warmed-up, it is buttery smooth in ‘C’ mode,
- The manual down-shifts / ‘manual kick-downs’ via the ‘-‘ direction on the drive selector lever work great for gears 6, 5, 4, and 3.
- When the transmission is cold, the first 2-3 minutes only, there are hard, jerky shifts into 2nd gear, including some ‘unnecessary’ down shifts in to 2nd gear and delayed up-shifts into 3rd gear.
- Any manual down-shift / 'manual kick-down' via the ‘-‘ direction on drive selector lever into 2nd gear are always hard and jerky, even when the transmission is warmed up. Can’t really ever use the transmission for that.
- Will a transmission fluid services help?
- What other transmission repair would help?
- Will it get worse over time?
- Just live with it?
Thanks!

Any shop with a half decent diagnostic tool will be able to read transmission codes - first prize for DAS of course. It may be one of the internal speed sensors that failed. Ask me how I know.
If you are lucky you may have a place that reconditions the board/module in your region else you'll have to replace as sensors are soldered/crimped in. I had mine done a few months ago after transmission started doing weird things. I thought it was fluid related (just didn't feel right) but my indy ran a quick scan 'just in case' and found intermittent sensor issues - can't remember the codes. All good after fix.
Transmission service never hurts, cold flow usually isn't great but it worsens over time for sure. The OEM pour isn't synthetic so it doesn't age as well as it should for 60k mile interval in my experience. Combine that with a new filter, panbolts, and you're golden.

There's a more definitive thread on this problem somewhere in here that offers some solutions. Seems many folks just live with it, but it is profoundly annoying. Jerks for first 10 min or so.
I'm all ears to any solution that costs less than the car is worth (not much).

I swapped the PWM solenoid with a OE new one. All O-rings from the other solenoids, the 2 filters and 2 strainers in the bottom part of the valve body.PWM solenoid info: https://mbworld.org/forums/c32-amg-c...em-solved.html
