Heated Steering Wheel in 2004 E 500

I know I know, i live in FL but I drive out of state alot. I'm driving to North Carolina and New York this Christmas to New Year. I'm in FL now and have been trying to test my heated tseering wheel feature. Doesnt warm up at all. The temp here now is 75-80 so I'm wondering if it has to be cold before it even warms up. previous threads say it should at least warm up for a few seconds.

It will not come on at all in warmer weather. I seem to remember above 60 degrees but that could be wrong.

From my experience you will not notice any effect until it is cold. The heating elements react quickly but never get hot enough to be distracting... just comfortable. Once the cabin comes up to temperature the steering wheel heat disappears. It is all a very subtle system that is really only noticeable for the first 5-10 minutes when the car is really cold but it virtually eliminates the need to drive with gloves in a cold car.

Is the heated wheel a separate option or does it come with heated seats?

I have the wood and leather wheel and I can't feel it heat up at all. I assume it's a separate option??

Heated Wheel

Puzz1:

The description for a heated wheel specifically states that the wood/leather wheel is not available with that option. Confirm on MBUSA web site in "build your own".

theres a heated leather steering wheel, a wood and leather wheel and a heated wood and leather steering wheel. the heated wood and leather wheel from the dealer i believe is something like $2500 or $2700. fazooley has had all 3 in his e500.

The heated steering wheel will NOT work in warmer climates. The Temp signal is carried to the Steering Wheel Heater Control Module via CANBUS. If the temp is too high in the cabin (eg warmer climate areas) the steering wheel heater will not turn on at all. Steering wheel heating is an option of the E class and if you have it then the end of the steering column switch should TWIST. The red Led on the end will light then. The system operates on 2 modes. High heating for 7 minutes and then low heating. These modes are controlled exclusivly by the control unit ONLY. The control unit itself is a power inverter and changes voltage from 12 volts to 48 and 42 volts (high and low respectivly) The steering wheel itself has temperature sensors build into it also to monitor the heating element and these signals are carried to a small control unit inside the steering wheel and then passed to the main Steeing Wheel Heater COntrol Unit via CANBUS. As you can see, it's not a simple heater.

heated steering wheel..

I love the heating steering wheel these days! I live in Norway...and right now it's full winter outside, with lots of snow and cold
I usually wear gloves when I enter my car, but as soon as I turn the engine on, I activate the heated steering wheel, and I can take off my gloves...within a few seconds the wheel gets comfortably warm, and it stays that way until the interior is warm...very convenient if you live in an area where there's cold!! I don't understand why people in the southern states of USA need this...do you ever get any snow there??
Heated steering wheel is a must if you live with snow or cold climate durin winter...it works great!!

I have the heated steering wheel in my 03 E500. It will only be noticed in the cooler weather below 50 degrees outside and your car's ambient temperature is 50 degrees or less inside. It is very noticable when we get those few cold morning and the garage gets down to forty. Thank god that does not happen too often!

I actually brought my car in to have them check if everything was wired up correctly becuase it had me second guessing so much if it actually worked. However, a few weeks ago it got down to like 40 in the morning and I felt it work almost immediately. The only thing which makes me annoyed is that the wood dosent heat up, just the leather surroundings.

There is a heated wood/charcoal wheel on ebay.de right now. They don't show up very often.
