Gawd, I can't stand this. I love them both! Design language Blah!
The 5 looks like a 3 and the E looks like a C. And I don't care.
Both rock.
Now what to do?? I can't have both...
Can I?

side profile of the E is nice IMO. black doesn't look to nice on this car, white and grays go really well though IMO

My favorite part of the F10, is that to me it seems clear that BMW went to the E39 and even E34's spirit to harken back, sure it's technically an evolution of the E60, but to me, this is classic BMW brought back, and the interior gives off the warmer feeling of the E39 as well.

A rendition of the M5, which on another Board, a BMW rep called "disgusting" or something, so apparently it'll look a lot better, however IMO this looks pretty hot.

My eyes just can't make sense of the 212's front enough for me to like it, and I find it, namely the headlights to be non-harmonious, however, I do think it has a striking effect in the right angles, and doubtlessly most people will find it more interesting to look at than the 5's, at least initially (I think the 5's will age better).
Additional qualifier. As a A4 owner I do also like Audi's but that's another topic.

Yeah, I've always liked M-B more, at least after the 2000 era, and back and forth before. But I'm personally not into brand loyalty, whoever makes the best car for me wins!
I think the F10 really widens the gap in terms of how BMW is always perceived over M-B, younger, slicker, more athletic, the 212 is a very staunch and conservative design and shape, albeit with lots of details going on and aggressive twists and angles to keep it interesting to "young" people as well, however it is a "parents" car through and through, just like the other E's, I always knew that of the 211, but liked it enough to buy it anyway (and hated the E60), however this time around, I just feel like the F10 is bringing back my craving to drive something that's intended for "spirited" drivers.

Love my 212 - think BMW just looks so so
I think the new 5 just looks like a larger 3 series - and honestly find it rather boring. I don't see any real style innovation while I think my 350 4Matic retains some classic elements of MB styling with some modern appointments that makes it relevant to today's market and buyer. I've had it for almost a month now and just absolutely love it.

E, 5, M, A6, whatever. They're all parents cars. Now that I own an E, I expect my wife will become pregnant any day now. haha
I'm sure the new 5 will handle great (it's a BMW), but it looks big, bloated and anything but hip. The E definitely has a more aggressive design - hardly conservative. The 211 was conservative. But the 212 is still a large Benz, so it'll probably always have a perception disadvantage when it comes to the younger market. As will just about any car bigger than an entry level.

I liked current 5 but its a very tired look at this point and massively overpriced for its technology. New one looks very good in my opinion - kind of a pushed in 7. WOnt be around in 550i or any xi versions till october. Havent seen any word yet on whether a 550xi will be offered.

It just depends on the person. The 212 is a bit too stern and up-tight for me, and yes, conservative, like the other E's, I personally usually equate boxy lines with designs meant to attract a more mature crowd, however at the same time I think there's some "goofy" busyness going on with the 212, which is what is the true "love it or hate it" aspect, which probably also are the aspects that will attract potential younger buyers.
No doubt to me the F10 looks tons "younger", but hey that's just me.
If having relevance in todays market is equal to looking a lot like many high selling Japanese/Korean cars out there, than the 212 indeed is there, what I like about the F10, is that it doesn't follow any current design trends, which means it won't look "out-dated" as fast as the (this time around) trendier E-Class.

I can't wait to see the next 550i. That will be sick with the M package.
Even the current E60 550i with the M package is still sick and would really consider one. That's the only version of the E60 I like. The other ones are just ewww.

Exactly. All these people who are calling the F10 "boring", etc. are comparing an AMG Package 212 (which it needs Standard to look alluring at all), and a base F10. Not a fair comparison.
If we're gonna compare non Sport versions, it's a bit of a different story. The F10 looks far far sportier and more athletic than a non AMG Package 212.

A few toys & 07' E350 4matic w/AMG sport packg.
From the pics the new 5 series is a HUGE improvement over the current car. I'm actually starting to like the new E sedan and like the looks with the 350 sport rims vs the 550's amg styled wheels (not one of AMG's best efforts imo)...I will be curious to see the new 5 in the flesh before I make any final judgements but so far so good. I've also seen pics/renderings of the new 6 series which if hold's true it would be an improvement over the current car and it appears to have a folding hard top.

I must say though, if that is what the new M5 is gonna look like, it is more subtle than the current one. The current M5 is just really beefed-up. I like it a lot.

It's funny 'cause when you see the pictures of this new 5 VS the old 5, the new one makes the old one look like a slab of meat, so much more going on with the new design, however it's true that the new one gets most of us saying how much more subdued it is. I think that has to do with controversy for one (last one was controversial and unexpected for its time, and the fact that the new one is just so cleanly designed and perfectly proportioned, while the last one is really odd, inspiring some "do I love it or think it's putrid" thoughts.
I'll save my final opinion for when I see it IRL, if it really does look like a 3-Series, I'm not gonna love it, as the 3 is kind of boring to me for whatever reasons. If it looks as stunning as I hope it will (being someone who really appreciates a super clean and flawless design), then I'll be on board.

Don't be mad that the F10 is looking hot, fanboyism is like wearing blinders, much healthier to judge each car individually.

Side by side pics. Sorry guys, this to me proves how much more athletic and youthful, not to mention cleaner, more cohesive, and elegant the 5 looks. The E just looks too tense, staunch, square/boxy, and serious, and the best angle, the front, is too overly cartoon-y, something the American makers have been doing for almost a decade now. The rear of the E looks a bit frumpy next to the 5's. I will say, although I'm not a fan of the E's disproportionate headlights, the front of the E is the only angle that beats the 5's IMO. The 5's front is its weak point it seems, much like the E's butt. Not to mention the 5's interior looks more luxurious and classier to me as well, which is a first.

Actually, in all fairness, I gotta say the 5's front looks pretty horrible in some pics, I really hope it looks better in real life, or at least the M-Sport REALLY fixes it. Damn EU Regulations and BMW for not finding a way to work around them.

That gold luxury edition 212 certainly doesnt look nearly as nice as a sport package with 18,s.. I have never seen uglier wheels on an E, the 5er does look better in some angles over the E in your pics but the front of the 5 looks like it slammed into a flat cement wall.
This 212 blows away the bland RLish styled 5er.
