Replacing the front ashtray

Just brought home our new E Class. Initial impressions are very positive.
Is anyone aware of an aftermarket replacement for the front ashtray to convert it to a coin holder or smaller tray? The coin holder in the glove box seems like a joke.

A car with a non-smoker package (standard in Europe) comes without a cigarette lighter but with a power connector and a mat in the "ash-tray".

I can't seem to find the part listing for European models. I did speak to my dealer about this last night when going over the car. I did PM "Konigstiger" as well.

If enough people are interested, maybe we can set up a bulk buy from Europe if that is the source.

Removing ashtray

On my last car, I just took out the metal cigarette holder and then lined the bottom with a piece of sticky on one side felt. Worked great and when I sold the car, I took out the felt, used a little Goof Off to remove the residue and poped the cigaretter holder back in.
On my E, I just dropped the coins in and have no problems. No rattles or anything and the opening is big enough to reach in and get the coins out.

Great idea. I'm sure your solution also cost less than $5.
I think I'll pursue this avenue. This is why I love forums.

Edit: After some thought, I guess I could take an old mouse pad and cut it to fit the compartment with the ashray removed. That would give a nice, cushioned area provided the pad is not too thick.

You have a nice new W212, please order the OEM mat from your dealer, your car deserves it and you would not upset fellow MB owners who visit your car.

In following DB’s post, it looks as though part #2128130002 may be the ashtray replacement (#200 in diagram – ashtray stowage compartment, center console). Possibly European members can recommend a source for confirmation/purchase.

Simple solution

So I feel pretty silly about this.

I took the ashtray out of the car. Examining it demonstrated that the metal frame was just clipped on. I popped of the frame, glued a piece of photo paper into the dish, and popped it back in. Voila. instant coin, cell phone tray. Simple solution to a simple problem.

Its all original equipment too, so no other MB owner who sits in my car will get upset.

But it's not OEM photo paper.

The photo paper, being white, reflects the light a little more making it easier to see what is in the tray. The paper also muffles some of the noise of coins moving around. Its not as good as felt, but serves its purpose.

As far as it not being official MB paper, I created my own bootleg paper by printing a silver MB star on the paper. You just take a 4x6 size card and cut it about half. I'm good to go...

huh! learned something new. Thanks for the tip on popping off the metal cover. maybe I'll take a trip to the local store to buy some felt. However, knowing how I am, I'll probably just end up leaving the coins in there to rattle around.

Thx for the recommendation!!! I popped mine off today. Was great for holding the keys as well as my iPhone. No meaningful rattles even with no paper or felt in there.

you can use the loop side of velcow(the soft part) and cut it pretty damn close to perfect fit in about 2 minutes flat. threw my quarters back in and its super quiet, looks fantastic.

O.k., it took me a little more than 2 minutes flat, but I went to Michaels arts and crafts store. Picked up a sheet of black felt for $1.49. The felt has adhesive backing to it. I spent about 15 minutes cutting the pieces out and sticking it to the tray. I was even able to cut out a hole for the light. Any parts that had gaps between the felt panels, I just shoved in thin pieces of felt.

It looks seamless now and pretty professional. It's not as squishy as velcro, but it works for me. We'll have to see about the noise.

Great solution pulling the metal top off!

Sounds like some good solutions until MB comes out with a W212 rubber pad like they did for the W211.

But instead of velcro, or arts and crafts materials, etc.., why not use real automotive moleskin like you see in, well, cars.

You can get it at auto body supply stores. Or get it here: http://www.tintprotector.com/strips/index.htm

well, I would have used moleskin if I knew that product existed and I wasn't so darned impatient. I was just so excited to see make the adjustment.

Oh well. $1.49 is hard to beat.
