Spoiler install: tape, glue or both

I noticed some comments on the Canadian Spoiler thread and didn't want to high-jack it so thought I'd start a new topic.

What method have you guys used to attach the spoilers, any issues, if you used glue what type?

Thanks

FTB

I used the 3m tape that comes applied with the spoiler, I also added a nice bead of silicon adhesive right down the center of the spoiler where it touches the trunk lid. Worked like a charm. Have you and a buddy hold down each side firmly for 5 minutes, then apply some masking tape accross it every 10 or inches. Walk away...come back in an hour or so and remove the tape and your good to go.

was wondering how it's done at the factory..........it is bolted on right?
I didn't mean to be so condescending when I mentioned my dislike for a 'taped'
on spoiler on the Canadian thread, it's just that doesn't seem as durable to me....

It is the exact same application for factory or dealer install. Mine is rock solid. No worries.

Went to the dealer yesterday and they also verified both spoilers are "TAPED" on at the factory.

Thanks Philly and "GO GIANTS"

Believe me you don't want for it to be bolted or drilled on. Drilling can compromise sheet metal especially in an accident. Bolting on can cause corrosion and rust issues for those who live in the snow belt area.

3M is a very strong product. I have had roof spoilers on the car with just 3M tape and its witheld for over 100,000 miles in New England weather.

A tip I can share with you is that use a blow dryer to soften the adhesive before you put it on and then use it again right after you put it on. Then like Billy said use the painters tape to keep it in place while the adhesive cures on the metal.

I had applied both a rear and roof spoiler on my ride using the strong 3M tape and it's been there for about 2 years now with no issues !

I know this is a super old *** thread, but what kind of double sided 3M? I want to remove my factory one and repaint it black. They have a foam one, which is really thin and non foam one..

just fyi, you might read this before by other members, when you remove the spoiler, don't pull it too hard or you'll snap it. also, it'll be easier if you can have someone put it back on after. i think black spoiler will look great on your ride. good luck and don't forget to post some pics after .

Ty for the tip! I will make sure I do it slowly. I'm guessing by heating it up with a blow dryer, would make it much easier huh?

Funny you guys resurrected this thread today...as I was finishing washing my car I noticed that one of the corners on the trunk lid spoiler had become undone...the car is three months old and it came with the spoiler from the factory ...I can clearly see that the spoiler was taped on...I'm going to call the dealership tomorrow to have it repaired, I mean re-taped and de-badged while at it...

Is it put on at the factory or at the dealer? I notice a funny line on the paint under the spoiler that looks like some sort of cleaner was used. Maybe the dealer used something crazy to wipe before the tape was put in place? Anyway I can't remove it so I'll see what they say.

So the fact that they are taped mean this is pretty much a cosmetic garnish? Or is the tape good enough to actually offer downward pressure for better performance?

From the looks of it, these tape are very durable. I'm sure if they weren't, MB would not use it.

heating it up and use floss to remove it should be much easier. use goo gone and alcohol to clean up the mess. i used some tapes to mark the place and made sure everything is aligned before i putting it back on.

I'm assuming they use tape because bolts may cause water to leak into the trunk over time. Could be wrong.
