W212 a rip-off of the W126??
Perusing around the Web for pics of the great W126, my theory of the W212 being.... not an evolution of the W124, so much is it is of the W126, became more apparent. Hey, if you're gonna copy and modernize a car, what better than one you have in your own repertoire, and one that is perhaps the quintessentially most perfect and legendary Sedan ever made? Taking it even further than styling; interior ambiance, and the granite carved drive to degrees as well.

Had a 91, after 190k miles and it still looked and drove great. I've actually been thinking about buying another after I recently saw a mint 420 sel but too many cars now.

It goes without saying that Bimmer guys are stereotypically more "enthusiastic", but damn, the cars been out a year less than ours, and they have far more action.

FTB: I too really wanna pick one up. I just don't have anywhere to put it. You can find good examples for well under $5K for the Sedan, for that amount of car, and to own a modern Classic, it's well worth it. I saw a guy post a blacked out one with clear side markers in the W126 Forums, and it looks MEAN! Just made me want one all over again.
Idk, obviously, the W212 is a 32 year newer design, so we're not talking literal look-alikes, and although the 212 takes on some new lines schemes formerly not of a Benz (save for the modernized "Ponton" fenders), from the very first time I saw it, I could tell the designers had the W126 in mind as a starting point, in terms of character. The W212 is supposed to be M-B's first "Out of Chrysler, we are back to old form" statement (well, the W221 actually technically was, but they were still married to Chrysler), so I think going for a W126 vibe would he very calculated, in trying to get that across.

Your comparison to the W126 just attests to the timeless design of MB vehicles; the older models are still appealing even 30+ years later. I drove a 72 280SE 4.5 and I still miss it! There's no question that classic stylng cues are re-appearing across both european and domestic models.

That's definitely true as well.
Indeed! Nobody can really compete with M-B's heritage. I love nothing more than when they reach into their past, to pull out idea's and influences for their progressions into the future. And this does seem to be a trend with all manufacturers to an extent, which is AWESOME to me. If you got those iconic designs in your history, then why not respectfully, tactfully, and subtly, harken back some of their cues.
That's a great looking W126 GuyFawkes! I was practically born in a W126. Since the day I was born, my parents had a bright Gold 300SD (Diesel). The W126 can be had for so cheap, if I had the room, I'd probably just buy one to have it around. Would look cool with the W212.
