It would be cheaper to rent...

After 12 weeks of ownership and 1163 miles on the clock, it would be cheaper to rent cars when I'm on the west coast, versus buying one, especially when averaging 97 miles per week. Oh well, I like the convenience of bypassing the Avis counter, meeting the car service, being driven home and then having my own car to drive from there.

I will say, I'm rather pleased with the gas mileage so far. The picture below represents my typical commute to the office:
  • 18 miles each way
  • 34 minute commute (not bad for the Bay Area, actually traffic is better here than in Chicago, IMO)
  • Average Speed = 32 MPH
  • MPG = 24.6

At that rate your car will be around when the Eagles win the Super Bowl (at least 50 years from now). Enjoy.

Well, the Eagles will probably get there 5 years earlier than DaBears, unfortunately!

Very impressive gas mileage - especially considering the short commute. You have a light foot or some secrets I don't know about.

I have no secrets and the strange thing is, I'm not even trying to hypermile. I became curious of the gas mileage after reading other threads about gas mileage, types of fuel, etc. I started checking the mileage both from reset as well as trip, and the mileage I'm getting seems fairly consistent. I believe I'm simply "real world" driving, to and from my office, to the cleaners, car wash, golf course, errands, etc., but on a limited basis as I commute between two states by air frequently.

Of note, my average speed and mileage, since delivery, isn't far off the average for the commute. I guess it doesn't bother me so much that this car isn't a rocket ship or that the BMW in front of me is faster, because it seems there is almost always a Prius in front of the BMW and the Prius driver is typically texting or on their cell phone, i.e., going slow. The real world driving limits the ability, most of the time, from really pushing the car in the daily routine.

Here are a few pics of the commute, from one of my other cars, which I recently shipped back to Chicago. The one road without stop lights is a speed trap (yes, I know first hand), so even with no traffic, it is poorly advised to get that pure driving excitement out of a few curves and acceleration. A nice commute it is, though, and the gas mileage is a bonus.

I love Marin County, but this is between Pleasanton, CA and my office. The road is Niles Canyon, just one of many great roads around here.

Great mileage, my lowly 328i gets crap 22mpg in the city. Thanks for the pics, makes me yearn to be back in the west coast. You must love the commuting to/from Chicago!

I prefer commuting from rather than to Chicago this time of year, for weather related reasons. My wife told me the snow plow service came three times in one day to clear the drive on Tuesday or Wednesday...too cold for me, but here, it is supposed to get to 71 this weekend! Much better!!!

I agree.

I can only get 24+ on the Highway. During "Mixed" commutes, in traffic/city areas, I get crappy Mileage in this car. Worse than my W211 even.
