Mine is a Hill HOlder. Only works on inclines. Have tried it several times and it only works on inclines. BTW, my Hyundai had it, as did my Toyota. Nice to have, but not that unusual these days.

Sad story. We may never know all the facts, but if the car was in gear she probably used the hold feature. Not a lot of awesomeness.

A sad story but the forum is underestimating German engineering. Have you tried what happens if you have brake hold activated and open the door and try to get behind the car? I've tried it on my 221 but the 212 is later design and must be at least equally clever: if the car is on gear and brake hold active and I open the door, the car not only changes gear to P but also engages the parking brake.

I wonder if this accident could have been from hill assist. Isn't hill assist holding the car only momentarily (mainly intended for cars with manual gearbox, to allow the driver to change the foot from the brake pedal to the gas pedal). I don't have a place to test what happens if I open the door when hill assist is keeping the car stationary but it sounds odd if the driver would have enough time to go to the rear of the car before hill assist releases. I'm guessing the person inside made a wrong move.

It would be kind of weird though since one would have to apply the brake to get the car in gear if it were in park.

Brake hold - initiated by the driver by giving the brake pedal an extra little push once the vehicle is stopped. 'HOLD' shows up in the instrument cluster. Disengaged by pressing the brake pedal again or the accelerator.

Hill hold - done automagically by the vehicle when stopped on an incline. Brakes are left engaged for a second or two to prevent rolling backwards as the driver's foot goes from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

That's true. "HOLD" will always go into Park when it deactivates by itself, or it's supposed to for that matter.

I didn't know this was a feature. I am going to try it tomorrow. So if I am reading the post right, i right need to do a quick tap of the brake to enable hold.

Sorry guys, i know I didn't read through the ENTIRE manual and have a sight disadvantage as I bought my car over the phone and never met the dealer for the walk through.

Thank god for this forum! :-)

Hold will only automatically put the vehicle in park if you have one with the transmission shifter stalk (whatever Mercedes calls it...).

For example: on my 2012 C300 if you have brake hold activated and remove your seatbelt and open the door a red message will appear on the display. If you get ouf of the car and close the door it will actually begin to HONK AT YOU to tell you to get the hell back inside.

HOLD, MB vs BMW methodology

While there are certainly merits to both, the method which MB uses is in my opinion far superior from a usability perspective. The BMW system requires you first activate it by pressing a button. Yes, it will then automatically HOLD any time you come to a stop. However, try any type of maneuver where you need to feather the break pedal, eg. parking and it is maddening as you have to remember to turn it off. I noticed this when I tried to paralell park a new 5er. It also cycles off with the ignition so you always must remember to turn it on when you start the car. I also noticed it seems the system tries to anticipate your impending stop and is sometimes less than smooth on the application of the brakes. I believe some Lexus models also have a similar system. The MB system, always on, seems to be much easier to use and is never, again in my opinion, intrusive to normal driving.

I don't recall my "d" having had a 'hold" function.Was it unique to the 5 Series,to 2010 and up or to a particular option? Or did my "d" have it all along and I just didn't realize it?

I must say that I like "hold" a lot and,for some reason,have often wondered how effective it is when used on a steep hill.Someday maybe I'll try to find out.

I can't seem to get mine to work. Maybe i am doing something wrong or don't understand the concept. I remember when i tested the 5 series, i was able to pull up to a light, come to a complete spot and take my foot of the brake and the car wouldn't roll. it would act as if you had your foot on the brake.

Is that what the hold feature does??

to an early comment above, i do know that if i open the drivers door while in Drive, the car would automatically go to Park.

That's basically what it does.On my Bluetec all one needs to do is,when stopped and without taking your foot from the brake pedal,give the pedal a firm push and,voila,"hold" appears on the instrument cluster.

If you're driving a 2002 CLK it might well not have that feature.IMO,that could be why you can't get it to engage.

Mine worked after 2 quick pushes after stopped.

I tried the single push...but that didn't trigger HOLD to engage....will try it again later.
